**Type:** Continental Arcane Institution and Scholarly Consortium
**Region:** Baltun’ia-wide (headquartered primarily in [[Tirn’ael]] and key arcane centers such as [[Crescent's Peak|Crescent’s Peak]] and [[Alavand]])
**Founded:** Established during the First Age, codified and formalized by [[Mireth Silverbranch]]
**Alignment:** Neutral to benevolent, focused on the responsible study, regulation, and advancement of magic and arcane knowledge
---
### Overview
The **Arcane Concord** is the foremost institution dedicated to the study, preservation, and regulation of magic across Baltun’ia. Born from the visionary efforts of the [[Elves|elven]] mystic Mireth Silverbranch in the dawn of recorded history, the Concord represents a coalition of mages, scholars, and technomancers from all races and regions. Its founding principle is that magic, while a potent and often dangerous force, must be understood, respected, and harnessed with wisdom for the benefit of all.
Throughout Baltun’ia’s tumultuous history—empires rising and falling, wars raging, and societies reshaping—the Arcane Concord has remained a bastion of arcane learning and the keepers of one of the oldest surviving magical traditions: the **[[The Threefold Mysteries|Threefold Mysteries]]**.
---
### Historical Background and Origins
- **Founded by Mireth Silverbranch** in Tirn’ael during the early First Age, the Arcane Concord grew out of a need to organize what had been a chaotic and fragmented practice of magic. Mireth codified magical principles into the **Threefold Mysteries**, a triadic framework balancing illusion and divination, nature-based magic, and elemental evocation.
- Initially an elven initiative, the Concord’s influence expanded over centuries to include other races—[[Dwarves|dwarves]] intrigued by rune-forging, [[Humans|human]] arcanists eager to unlock ley line secrets, [[Gnomes|gnomish]] inventors melding clockwork and sorcery, and even select awakened [[Automatons|automatons]] seeking to understand their arcane cores.
- During the Second Age, despite dwarven political dominance, the Concord operated as a neutral ground where arcane knowledge continued to flourish, albeit under increasing restrictions imposed by imperial authorities wary of uncontrolled magic.
- The **[[The Revolt of the Free Peoples|Revolt of the Free Peoples]]** saw the Concord playing a quieter, yet critical role—its scholars aiding rebel mages, preserving arcane knowledge, and protecting ley lines from imperial interference.
- Throughout the Third Age, as city-states rose, the Arcane Concord redistributed itself into powerful arcane academies, libraries, and research centers, notably in cities like Crescent’s Peak and Alavand, fostering a renaissance of magical and technological innovation.
- In the current Fourth Age, the Concord is a pivotal voice amid rising tensions, emerging magitech industries, and societal debates about the nature of magic, automatons, and power.
---
### Structure and Membership
The Arcane Concord is not a tightly centralized organization but a _network_ of affiliated academies, guilds, and research houses united by shared principles and cooperation.
- **Council of Arcane Elders:** A rotating assembly of the most respected magisters from member institutions, responsible for setting guidelines, resolving disputes, and overseeing cross-regional projects.
- **Guilds and Orders:** Specialized groups within the Concord focus on areas such as elemental magic, rune-forging, mana theory, ley line research, magical artifact preservation, and arcane ethics.
- **Membership:** Drawn across all races, from elven high mages, human arcanists, dwarven rune-smiths, to awakened automatons seeking to explore their magical origins.
- **Training and Apprenticeship:** The Concord operates a rigorous system for educating novices, emphasizing discipline, ethical use of magic, and mastery of the **Threefold Mysteries**.
---
### The Threefold Mysteries
At the heart of the Concord’s teachings lies the **Threefold Mysteries**, a comprehensive system developed by Mireth Silverbranch that categorizes magic into three intertwined domains:
1. **The Moon’s Reflection – Illusion and Divination:**
This path teaches the art of perceiving and manipulating hidden truths—scrying the unseen, bending perception, and unveiling secrets. Practitioners develop keen insight into the unseen layers of reality.
2. **The Rooted Vein – Nature and Druidic Magic:**
Emphasizing harmony with the living world, this discipline harnesses the energies of flora, fauna, and elemental spirits. It guides renewal, healing, and natural cycles, fostering balance and resilience.
3. **The Eternal Flame – Evocation and Elemental Mastery:**
The most direct and potent form of magic, this mystery channels destructive and creative elemental forces—fire, water, air, and earth—to reshape the world or defend against threats.
Mastery of all three is considered the pinnacle of arcane achievement, symbolizing the unity of perception, life, and power.
---
### Roles and Influence
- **Guardians of Knowledge:** The Concord safeguards ancient texts, arcane artifacts, and precursors of magitech. They decipher [[Old Tongue]] glyphs and recover lost automaton technologies.
- **Regulators of Magic:** In an age when magic can fuel industry or weaponize destruction, the Concord advocates laws and ethical frameworks to prevent misuse, accidental catastrophes, or arcane corruption.
- **Political Actors:** While officially neutral, the Concord wields significant influence in city-states’ politics. Members often act as advisors or diplomats, balancing interests between factions such as the [[Vexen Overview|Vexen]] industrialists and the [[Belter Overview|Belter]] labor movements.
- **Research Pioneers:** Concord scholars spearhead ley line studies, arcane engineering, and magitech—pioneering advances that drive Baltun’ia’s modern renaissance.
- **Mediators:** When disputes arise over arcane territories, ancient ruins, or the rights of awakened automatons, the Concord often mediates, emphasizing knowledge, empathy, and cooperation.
---
### Culture and Customs
- **Arcane Rituals:** The Concord honors its founders through ceremonial enactments of the Threefold Mysteries, held in grand halls adorned with enchanted tapestries and living runes.
- **Scholarship and Debate:** Intellectual rigor and respectful discourse are pillars of Concord culture. Public symposia and private salons serve as places to test theory and challenge dogma.
- **Symbolism:** Their emblem, often a triune glyph representing the Moon’s Reflection, the Rooted Vein, and the Eternal Flame, adorns robes, staves, and seals.
- **Inclusivity and Diversity:** The Concord embraces diversity of race, thought, and discipline, viewing magic as a unifying force that transcends mortal divides.
- **Core Values:** Knowledge, responsibility, balance, and the pursuit of harmony between organic life, arcane energy, and mechanized innovation.
---
### Challenges and Controversies
- **Political Pressure:** The Concord walks a fine line, pressured by corporate powers benefiting from unregulated magitech, while defending against extremist factions wary of arcane influence.
- **Ethical Dilemmas:** The rise of sentient automatons and arcane hybrids challenges traditional doctrines—should automatons be considered equal members? Who holds rights over magical innovations?
- **Rival Factions:** They often clash with groups like the [[Shadowforged]], who accuse the Concord of complicity in industrial exploitation, or with radical Belters opposed to any arcane-automaton advancement.
- **Arcane Secrets:** The pursuit of lost Ancient knowledge tempts some members towards secrecy or forbidden magics, risking internal schisms or corruption.
---
### Summary
The **Arcane Concord** stands as Baltun’ia’s foremost steward of arcane knowledge and magical responsibility—an institution born from ancient wisdom and nurtured through centuries of change. As the continent grapples with the intertwining of magic, machine, and mortal ambition, the Concord’s voice remains a beacon for those who seek to understand the mysteries beneath the world’s surface and guide its power toward a balanced future.

**BALDWIN:**
“Brothers and sisters of [[Voxiu]]!
Look around you! These hands—these _real_, born‑to‑work hands—built this harbor, this market, this very city. You carved wealth from mud and brine while the [[Vexen Overview|Vexen]] lords took the coin and called it progress!”
_(Applause, shouts of “Aye!”)_
“Progress, they say! Progress that steals your craft and feeds steel men on your bread! Machines that do not tire, do not think, do not _care!_ Tell me—how can a soul forged from gears understand the worth of a single heartbeat?”
_(Crowd chants: “It can’t! It can’t!”)_
“They say I’m a dreamer of the past. I say I’m a reminder of what’s _real._ You feel pain when you work—ache in the back, sweat on the brow. That pain is proof you’re _alive!_ It’s the song of creation singing through flesh and bone!”
_(Wild cheering)_
“Now, election day nears. The Vexen man, Von Hesten, speaks of harmony between worker and contraption, of law and machine walking hand in hand! But if you trust him, soon no one will walk—only _march_ at the clank of an iron drum.”
_(Baldwin raises one fist; the noise swells.)_
“When you cast your vote, you choose whether your children will craft with hands—or rust in the shadow of engines! I promise you this: once your voices crown me, Voxiu will set the pattern for every city of [[Jessergate]]. We will make **ourselves** safe again, by removing what should never have been among us!”
_(Crowd begins a rhythmic chant. Baldwin lowers his tone, conspiratorial.)_
“Yes… there is something _special_ waiting beyond that victory night.
A cleansing of the gears, a return of the true heartbeat of labor.
A place for every worker, and for the others—well… the reclamation furnaces have gone too long without purpose. Soon, my friends, they shall blaze again, not for profit, but for _purity._”
_(Murmurs become thunder. He turns toward the [[Automatons|automaton]] on stage.)_
“But words are wind. Proof is power.”
_(He gestures; aides roll the automaton (SIX) forward.)_
“This one served down at the Bastion cranes. Loyal, they said. Useful. But crazed, this automaton has killed one of our own! [[Yanna Blackreed - Obsidian Archives|Yanna]] was slain in the night by this clanker in cold blood. This shall not stand in our city. In our world. Watch now as I show you who truly holds the spark of life in this city.”
_(He produces a rune‑etched rod, speaks a sharp incantation. A sigil ignites along the automaton’s chest—then backfires, flaring blue‑white. For a heartbeat the construct glows from within, projecting fragments of Ancient glyphs into the air. The crowd gasps.)_
**BALDWIN (voice cracking slightly):**
“No—stand back! The spell is—”
_(A thunderous pulse erupts outward. Lamps shatter. The automaton convulses, light spilling from seams like molten glass. A surge of unstable energy ripples across the square, knocking bystanders off their feet.)_
_(When the light fades, the automaton lies inert—smoke drifting from its shell. Baldwin staggers, sweat on his brow, gripping the podium.)_
**BALDWIN (hoarse, forcing confidence):**
“You see… even their false spark bows to the will of Voxiu! Even the Ancients that built them cannot defy _us!_”
_(Mixed reaction—cheers, fear, awe. The crowd presses closer; guards rush to steady the stage. The magic residue still crackles, faint blue lines crawling across nearby metal as if remembering the blast.)_
_(Baldwin raises his arm, voice trembling but defiant.)_
“Remember this sight, people of Voxiu! Remember who freed you this day! Vote [[Belter Overview|Belter]], and together we’ll reclaim our city from the hollow‑hearted clanks that stole it!”
_(He slams the rune‑rod onto the podium; sparks leap skyward as the crowd erupts once more, oblivious to the faint twitch of light rekindling in the automaton’s eye behind him.)_

Membership is fluid, drawing **[[Gnomes|gnomes]], [[Humans|humans]], [[Elves|elves]], and automatons** alike, united by reverence for invention as a sacred act.
---
### **Philosophy and Goals:**
- **The Gear is Divine:** All of existence is a great machine; every turn, wheel, and rhythm points toward cosmic order.
- **Automatons are Children:** Sentient constructs must be protected and uplifted as a divine mandate.
- **Invention as Prayer:** Every crafted device is built as a psalm, etched with runic scripture.
- **The Great Re-Alignment:** A prophecy holds that the _Leylines themselves are gears fallen out of joint_. The Collective strives to restore them, bringing about an Age of Harmony between flesh, spirit, and machine.
---
### **Political, Social, and Economic Influence:**
- **Political:** Vocal in Voxiu’s elections, often rallying crowds around automaton liberation and machine-theology debates.
- **Social:** Seen alternately as visionaries, lunatics, or heretics. They inspire fascination among philosophers but distrust from industrialists and traditional clergy.

- A **radical splinter sect** calls for automaton supremacy over organics, splitting the Collective.
- **[[Serpents Coil Overview|Serpent’s Coil]] smugglers** steal a Relic Core the Cogswrights consider holy, sparking a crisis.
- The prophecy of the **“Gearfall”** foretells catastrophic leyline collapse unless grand restoration rituals succeed.
- Rival factions like the **[[Arcane Concord]]** clash with the Collective, decrying their “machine mysticism” as irrational and dangerous.
- A **prophetic automaton** claims to receive visions directly from the Leylines themselves, drawing both reverence and fear.
---
### **Notable NPCs:**
- **Hierophant [[Hierophant Vezra Gearbloom - Obsidian Archives|Vezra Gearbloom]], “The Voice of the Forge” (Gnome):** Leader of the Collective. Wears robes of wire and silk. Preaches that the gods themselves are machines in disguise.

### Type:
Shadowy Imperial Conspiracy / Arcane-Political Cabal
---
### Core Focus:
The Crown of Ashes is an ancient, secretive organization dedicated to resurrecting a unified imperial order inspired by the ideology of King Rangrim the Unyielding. Through fracturing Baltun’ia’s ley lines, harnessing raw arcane energies, and igniting continent-wide conflict, they aim to forge a new era of dominion—where magical might and mechanized legions enforce a strict hierarchical order, bending all under their transformative flame.
---
### Regions & Cities of Influence:
- **Primary Stronghold: [[Kordrumm]] ([[Mountainvale]], [[Mimfjell]] Region)**
Once the heart of the proud [[Dwarves|dwarven]] empire, Kordrumm is now a place of whispered secrets and forbidden rituals. The Crown of Ashes has seized control of hidden vaults and subterranean chambers beneath the city, where ancient magics and war machines await reactivation. The city’s cavernous halls and ruined fortresses serve both as a power base and a ritual ground, steeped in ancestral glory and dark ambition.
- **Key Arcane Nexus: [[Hildywilde]] (especially around [[Pabrycg]])**
The Crown’s most vital secondary seat lies within the magically potent swamps and fog-shrouded forests of the Hindywildes. Here, ley lines pulse strongest, fractured and channeled by Crown ritualists. Ancient arcane towers and bio-magical laboratories manipulate wild magic, biological samples, and ley-line energy in an attempt to fuel the Crown’s war machines and arcane weapons. The region’s mystic energies cloak their activities from prying eyes, and alliances with local [[Feykin|feykin]] and druidic dissenters are tenuous but instrumental.
- **Operational Nodes:**
- **Jessergate’s [[Serpent's Way]]:** Political puppeteering and covert influence over city governance and trade policies to destabilize rivals and fund military build-up.
- **[[Crescent's Peak]]:** Arcane sanctuaries where scholars bend cosmic and ley energies to Crown designs, mapping fractures and astral flows.
- **[[Dragabri]] industrial centers:** Weapon manufacturing and [[Automatons|automaton]] enhancements fueled by volcanic power and ancient forge secrets.
---
### Structure & Membership:
- **The Smoldering Throne:**
The highest echelon—a council of “Embers”—is shrouded in secrecy. They communicate through coded sigils, arcane wards, and trusted intermediaries. Their identities are known only to the closest acolytes.
- **Hierarchy:**
- **Ashen Circle:** Master strategists, war magisters, and political figures directing the long-term plan.
- **Flamewardens:** Regional commanders and cell leaders overseeing military, magical, and espionage activities.
- **Cinderborn:** Field agents, infiltrators, and operatives executing covert assignments—often blending combat, sabotage, and ritual magic.
- **Ashborn Acolytes:** Devoted novices undergoing brutal training and indoctrination, often fanatic and expendable.
- **Hybrid Membership:**
The Crown uniquely integrates awakened automatons imbued with incendiary runes and ancient dwarven war tech as living war engines. These constructs act as lethal enforcers and symbols of the Crown’s mastery of flesh, steel, and flame.
---
### Historical and Political Background:
- **Legacy of [[King Rangrim the Unyielding]]:**
The Crown claims birthright as heirs to Rangrim’s vision of an unyielding empire forged by war, discipline, and arcane supremacy. They see the fragmented post-empire Baltun’ia as rife with weakness—ripe for reconquest and purification.
- **Ley Line Conquest:**
Their grand design is centered on controlling ley lines—channels of the earth’s magical lifeblood. By drilling and fracturing these veins beneath Kordrumm and the Hindywildes, they both sever power from rival factions and siphon it to fuel Crown artifacts, war automatons, and weapons of devastating power.
- **Engineers of Endless War:**
The faction breeds conflict by clandestinely supporting opposing forces—especially exacerbating tensions between the labor-focused [[Belter Overview|Belters]] and the automation advocates of the [[Vexen Overview|Vexen]]. This manufactured discord drains resources and softens resistance to the Crown’s ultimate advance.
- **Forbidden Arcanum:**
The Crown explores forgotten magics left by the Ancients—including soul binding, ley fusion, and elemental fire rites—far beyond the ethical bounds of the [[Arcane Concord]] or any public institution.
---
### Philosophy and Goals:
- **Fire and Renewal:**
War and destruction are sacred—a purgatory through which Baltun’ia must pass to attain a new, stronger order. The Crown views itself as the flame that will cleanse the continent of its rot and chaos.
- **Dominion through Unity:**
Their vision demands absolute hierarchy: all races, automatons, and powers brought under a single Crown—breaking down racial divides only to impose unyielding control.
- **The Great Renewal:**
The faction’s ultimate goal is to trigger an arcane-cataclysm—a convergence of fractured ley lines and magitech might that reshapes Baltun’ia’s political and magical landscape irreversibly, crowning the Crown of Ashes as the uncontested rulers.
---
### Political, Social, and Economic Influence:
- **Economic Web:**
Utilizing shell companies and secret investors, they control key mining operations (especially in Mimfjell and Dragabri), arcane component markets, and automaton manufacturing hubs.
- **Political Cells:**
Embedded within Jessergate’s political system, the Arcane Concord's arcane senate, and industrial guilds, they manipulate decisions to favor instability and military escalation.
- **Military Might:**
Their forces combine elite warrior cultists with march-ready automatons and experimental arcane armaments fueled by ley line energies fractured under their control.
---
### Culture and Customs:
- **Sacred Ashes:**
Members are ritualistically marked with ash and ember sigils representing their rank and spiritual commitment. These marks glow faintly when performing rites.
- **The Ashen Tome:**
A cryptic scripture blending poetry, arcane formulas, and imperial decree guides the Crown’s doctrine, study, and rituals.
- **The Dance of Embers:**
An occult ceremony symbolizing destruction and rebirth, performed during pivotal campaigns or political transitions.
- **Language of Smoke:**
Coded communication includes ash smokes, ember trails, cryptic runes, and sigils invisible to the untrained eye.

The Iron Sentinels are an elite mercenary order specializing in shock tactics, [[Automatons|automaton]]-enhanced warfare, and ruthless enforcement. Outwardly, they are a disciplined company of sell-swords available for high-paying contracts across Baltun’ia. Inwardly, they are a **shadow army**—bound in loyalty to the **Crown of Ashes** and dedicated to reforging Baltun’ia into a militarized empire. Their ultimate role is to lead the conquest once the Crown’s ley-fracturing and imperial restoration scheme ignites.
---

Secretly their ancestral base. Beneath the ruins, hidden vaults serve as training grounds and arcane crucibles for their war-automatons.

Hired muscle for Crown operatives, acting as unseen “security.” Also used to intimidate political adversaries during elections.
- **[[Hildywilde|Hildywildes]] – [[Pabrycg]]:**

- **Ashen Constructs:** Automatons fused with incendiary runes and Crown technology; terrifying battlefield assets.
- **Rank-and-File Mercenaries:** Many unaware of the Crown’s true command structure; loyal only to pay but manipulated to serve deeper goals.
---
### **Philosophy and Goals:**

- **The Ember Oath:** “All contracts burn to ash, except one” — their loyalty to any employer ends once the Crown calls.

- **Political:** Feared across Baltun’ia; city-states employ them as mercenary guards or shock troops, never knowing they serve the very conspiracy destabilizing them.

**Type:** Underground Resistance Faction / Saboteurs
**Primary Region:** [[Falduhir]] (origins), active continent-wide
**Alignment:** Pro-automaton rights, anti-oppression, anti-capitalist exploitation
**Known Leaders:** [[Veylin Stonefury]] (historical founder and martyr)
---
#### **Faction Overview**
The Shadowforged are a secretive and militant faction dedicated to the liberation and protection of [[Automatons|automatons]], particularly opposing the brutal industrial policies enforced by States using Automaton Reclamation Sites. They are composed primarily of disenfranchised [[Dwarves|dwarves]], sympathetic [[Humans|human]] and [[Gnomes|gnome]] technomancers, and awakened automatons themselves. Their activities focus on covert sabotage, rescue missions, and intelligence gathering aimed at undermining the capitalist exploitation of both automatons and organic laborers.
The Shadowforged reject the cold efficiency-driven calculus that deems automatons “broken,” “obsolete,” or “unprofitable,” and challenge the widespread dehumanization implicit in their forced exile to Reclamation Sites—camps where automatons are left to decay and rot away from society. To the Shadowforged, these sites are not merely industrial wastegrounds but symbols of systemic oppression that threaten the very dignity and sentience of the automaton kind.
---
#### **Ideology & Goals**
- **Automaton Liberation:** They believe automatons are sentient beings entitled to freedom, dignity, and self-determination, not disposable tools of exploitation.
- **Opposition to Capitalist Mechanization:** The automaton purging through Reclamation Sites exemplifies the ruthless capitalist drive to maximize profits at the cost of lives—both organic and mechanical. The Shadowforged seek to dismantle this system.
- **Abolishment of Automaton Reclamation Sites:** They target these camps specifically, staging raids to liberate automatons condemned to slow decay or forced dismantling.
- **Dismantling Centralized Control:** Corrupt governments and corporate powers—especially those aligned with the [[Vexen Overview|Vexen]] party—are viewed as enablers of automaton oppression and capitalist overreach. The Shadowforged strive to disrupt these networks.
- **Technological Reclamation:** They aim to reclaim and restore ancient automaton technologies lost or corrupted through centuries of exploitation and ignorance.
- **Symbiosis of Organic and Artificial Life:** The Shadowforged envision a future where automatons and organic beings coexist as equals, sharing knowledge and purpose rather than competing or enslaving each other.
---
#### **Historical Background**
The Shadowforged trace their origins to the late Second Age during dwarven imperial rule. As the empire rapidly expanded, rogue dwarves saught to fight against the imperial nature of the dwarven lord.
Veylin Stonefury, a dwarven general who defected upon witnessing the cruelty inflicted upon oppressed peoples, founded the Shadowforged as a clandestine resistance cell. His leadership culminated in the coordinated sabotage of the Deep Roads and multiple camp raids, striking at the heart of dwarven military and industrial power. Though captured and executed, Veylin’s martyrdom galvanized widespread rebellion against dwarven rule and imperial exploitation.
Since then, the Shadowforged have become a shadow network of operatives committed to exposing and tearing down the infrastructure that supports automaton subjugation, focusing on the brutal realities of the Reclamation Sites.
---
#### **Tactics & Operations**
- **Covert Sabotage:** Using stealth, arcane subversion, and technical expertise to disrupt Automaton Reclamation Sites—targeting power supplies, security systems, and dismantling mechanisms.
- **Liberation Missions:** Coordinated raids to free automatons trapped in camps, escorting them to safe havens or hidden enclaves where they can recover and organize.
- **Intelligence Networks:** Maintaining spies within automaton manufacturing centers, corporate guilds, and governmental offices to anticipate repression and strike effectively.
- **Technological Salvage:** Recovering and repurposing automaton parts and arcane cores from abandoned or destroyed camps to rebuild and empower liberations.
- **Alliances with Sympathetic Groups:** Collaborating with labor unions, radical [[Halflings|halfling]] and gnome guilds, and progressive arcane circles to build a coalition against capitalist exploitation and repression.
---
#### **Relations with Other Factions**
- **Vexen:** Bitter adversaries. The Vexen party’s pro-capitalist, pro-automatons-for-profit stance puts them at direct odds with the Shadowforged’s anti-exploitation agenda.
- **[[Belter Overview|Belters]]:** Sometimes uneasy allies. Although the Belters oppose automatons on ideological grounds, both factions share a distrust of capitalist elites and centralized authoritarian control, occasionally collaborating tactically.
- **Automaton Communities:** Revered as protectors and saviors. Many awakened automatons regard the Shadowforged as champions of their nascent freedom and dignity.
- **States and Corporate Powers:** Viewed as enemies and oppressors. Shadowforged actions make them targets for repression, assassination, and mass propaganda campaigns depicting them as terrorists.
---
#### **Symbolism & Culture**
- The name **Shadowforged** symbolizes their origins in secret, their forging of new futures out of shadows cast by oppression, and the fusion of organic resistance with automaton precision.
- Members adopt ritualistic forging motifs, inscribing runes and etchings onto their equipment and bodies as marks of commitment, remembrance, and solidarity.
- They hold periodic **Iron Dialogues**, clandestine gatherings dedicated to sharing knowledge—mechanical, magical, and philosophical—aimed at empowering both automatons and organic allies.
- Songs and lore emphasize themes of rebirth, broken chains, and ancestral machines awakened to new life.
---
### Summary
The Shadowforged stand as a living rebellion against the dehumanization perpetuated by Automaton Reclamation Sites and capitalist mechanization. They blend dwarven craftsmanship, arcane sabotage, and passionate idealism to fight for a future where automatons are no longer discarded tools but recognized as sentient partners in the shaping of Baltun’ia’s destiny.

### **Type:**
Explorers & Adventurer Coalition / Relic Merchant Consortium
---
### **Core Focus:**
The **Ashen Court** are explorers, scavengers, and traders who specialize in recovering artifacts, relics, and magitech from Baltun’ia’s countless ruins, battlefields, collapsed Deep Roads, and forgotten necropolises. Unlike the [[Vaultsingers Overview|Vaultsingers]], who preserve relics, or the [[Arcane Concord]], who study them, the Ashen Court’s goal is **acquisition and profit**.
They sell recovered artifacts to nobles, warlords, scholars, and collectors. They also act as middlemen between ruins and black markets like the **[[Serpents Coil Overview|Serpent’s Coil]]**. Their neutrality in politics makes them trusted by all (and loyal to none), but in truth, they carefully stoke demand by **controlling the flow of relics into the world.**
---
### **Regions & Cities of Influence:**
- **[[Dragabri]] – [[Ironswill]]:** Major operations run out of the trade halls and under‑markets, closest to ancient forges and collapsed imperial vaults.
- **[[Jessergate]] – [[Voxiu]]:** Cosmopolitan hub for auctions and artifact trade, catering to collectors, nobles, and guild leaders.
- **[[The Arids]] – [[Muzga]] & [[Snakhur]]:** Expeditions mount frequent digs across buried ancients’ ruins under shifting sands.
- **[[Verdant Isle]] – [[Sirastir]]:** Maritime staging ground for aquatic and jungle expeditions, including ruins swallowed by plant‑life.
- **[[The Weald]] & [[Mimfjell]]:** Adventuring parties sent deep into ley‑twisted ruins of [[Elves|elven]] cities and [[Dwarves|dwarven]] strongholds.
---
### **Structure & Membership:**
- **The Ember Guild (High Council):** Senior merchant‑explorers who own relic trading houses; they commission expeditions and set prices.
- **Ash Seekers:** Veteran explorers, ruin‑crawlers, relic thieves, and magitech prospectors. “Professional adventurers” under guild banners.
- **Scriveners:** Catalog artifacts, assess their provenance and magical instability, and record maps of half‑charted ruins.
- **Ashen Factors:** Merchant‑brokers who sell relics to buyers or discreetly funnel dangerous ones into auctions or private hands.
- **Hirelings & Mercenaries:** Conscript muscle, guides, smugglers, and monster‑hunters.
Membership is pragmatic, not dogmatic: opportunists, mercenaries, academics who turned rogue, and nobles hungry for power.
---
### **Philosophy and Goals:**
- **“Everything Worthwhile Emerges from Ashes”:** The past is a resource to be scoured, not worshiped.
- **Profit through Scarcity:** By controlling supply and information, they inflate relic prices and widen influence.
- **Pragmatic Neutrality:** They avoid overt politics, selling to [[Vexen Overview|Vexens]], [[Belter Overview|Belters]], [[Shadowforged]], or Crown agents equally, so long as coin flows.
- **Shaping the Present with the Past:** They see themselves as the future’s power brokers, determining who gets the tools of the Ancients.
---
### **Political, Social, and Economic Influence:**
- **Political:** Publicly they refuse partisanship; privately, they play both sides. Supplying Vexen elites with automaton cores while slipping the Belters relic‑weapons to fight automation.
- **Social:** Viewed as adventurers and opportunity‑makers by common folk, but distrusted by scholars and factions like the Vaultsingers.
- **Economic:** Wealthy collectors, rulers, and guilds depend on the Court for artifacts. Their auctions rival banking in [[Haffol]] for profit.
---
### **Culture and Customs:**
- **Ash Marks:** Each expedition member marks themselves with soot‑glyph “brands” from the first ruin they survive together.
- **Auction Masquerades:** Lavish, masked events where relics are sold anonymously to protect patrons.
- **Salvager’s Oath:** An internal rule: “First claim belongs to the hand that finds it, second claim to the Court itself.”
- **Relic Reforging:** Dangerous artifacts are sometimes dismantled and repurposed into “safe” trinkets. Other times, volatility is disguised to fetch a higher price.
---
### **Potential Plot Hooks & Conflicts:**
- A priceless relic dug up by Ashen Court salvagers is up for auction in Voxiu — PCs could bid, steal, or escort it.
- Rival expedition races — PCs compete or ally with Ashen Seekers in The Arids or Verdant Isle ruins.
- The Court accidentally unleashes something sealed away — and then tries to cover it up to avoid scandal.
- A powerful relic stolen from Vaultsingers turns up in an Ashen Court traveling caravan.
- PCs are sought as guides/mercenaries by Ashen Seekers headed into Mimfjell’s ruins — but must choose whether to let rare relics fall into their hands.
---
### **Notable NPCs:**
- **Guildmaster Caldus Marr, “The Emberhand” ([[Humans|Human]]):** Ruthless high‑merchant, known for burning down entire villages to cover up botched excavations.
- **Tira Anvel (Elf Reclaimer):** Daring explorer who sells her finds in high Voxiu auctions; pragmatic, wry, and always one step ahead of danger.
- **Brakk Coalvein (Dwarf Factor):** Obese merchant‑broker from Ironswill, specializes in black market automaton parts.
- **Sarith Dunestrider ([[Feykin|Feykin]]):** Desert salvager and guide; notorious for walking out of ruins with intact relics when entire expeditions failed.
- **Unit 12 “Smelt”:** Awakened automaton salvager, claims to remember fragments of the Ancients’ workshops. Keeps them silent—except when drunk.

Healing Guild & Medical Order (Neutral-to-Altruistic with pragmatic undertones)
---
### **Core Focus:**
The **Sable Coven** dedicate themselves to the healing arts: treating the wounded, alleviating disease, advancing medicine, and developing new alchemical and arcane remedies. Unlike formal hospitals tied to cities or temples, the Coven go where others will not — battlefields, plague zones, slums, and collapsing ruins.
They are driven by the principle that **life has no borders**: race, politics, and wealth should never dictate who receives healing. This humanitarian creed often places them at odds with regimes and factions who view access to medicine as a privilege or political tool.
The Sable Coven are pragmatic healers: they are known for harsh bedside manner, grim efficiency, and practical methods. They wear the name “Coven” not out of mysticism but because outsiders found their midnight surgeries, strange poultices, and unnatural success unsettling.
---
### **Regions & Cities of Influence:**
- **[[Jessergate]] – [[Serpent's Way|Serpent’s Way]]:** Field clinics and healing halls to serve slum dwellers, dockworkers, and the destitute.
- **[[Dragabri]] – [[Ironswill]]:** Triage halls supporting forge-workers and veterans constantly injured by industrial labor and mercenary conflict.
- **The [[Hildywilde|Hildywildes]] – [[Pabrycg]]:** Herbalists and druids blend swamp medicine with Coven practice, creating potent alchemical cures.
- **[[Stoffen]] – [[Ledon]]:** Medicinal farms and apothecaries provide core supply lines for Coven operations.
- **Battlefields Across Baltun’ia:** Mobile triage wagons and field surgeons are deployed in conflicts, often neutral parties allowed safe passage.
---
### **Structure & Membership:**
- **The Circle of Salves:** Senior apothecaries, plague-breakers, and master surgeons who direct research and resource distribution.
- **Bloodhands:** Field medics and healers, equally trained in stitching wounds, magic, and battlefield triage.
- **Greenbrews:** Herbalists and potion-makers, specializing in remedies sourced from rare plants and leyline-influenced flora.
- **Ashroses:** A compassionate but feared group of plague-workers and epidemic responders, known for entering infected districts when no one else dares.
- **Lay-Friends:** Common volunteers who help maintain wards, carry water, prepare bandages, or dig graves when healing fails.
Membership is diverse: [[Humans|humans]], [[Gnomes|gnomes]], [[Halflings|halflings]], [[Elves|elves]], [[Feykin|feykin]], and even [[Automatons|automatons]] who specialize as **caretaker healers**.
---
### **Philosophy and Goals:**
- **Compassion Above Politics:** All wounded deserve care, no matter allegiances.
- **Knowledge Shared, Not Hoarded:** They publish basic medical texts and train commoners in hygiene and survival.
- **Healing Without Judgement:** They treat criminals, nobles, rebels, automatons, and soldiers with the same efficiency.
- **Preservation First, Reform Through Healing:** They believe strengthening communities through health will naturally reform corrupt systems.
---
### **Political, Social, and Economic Influence:**
- **Political:** Deny affiliation with any party, but their neutrality is politicized — [[Belter Overview|Belters]] petition them to bolster workers, [[Vexen Overview|Vexens]] resent them healing “unprofitable bodies.”
- **Social:** Beloved by commoners, distrusted by elites who see them as potential agitators for the downtrodden.
- **Economic:** Supported by donations, “healing tithes” offered voluntarily by grateful communities, and rare coin from reliable mercenary contracts. They are not rich, but universally valued.
---
### **Culture and Customs:**
- **The Oath of Ash and Rose:** Members swear to heal all who come, even enemies. "Ash" signifies death they cannot stop, "Rose" the life they nourish.
- **Night-Vigils:** Healers light lanterns for three nights after mass deaths, guiding spirits and comforting survivors.
- **Scar Binding:** Senior healers tattoo or scar themselves with emblems of healed wounds — each scar or mark represents a life saved.
- **Gray Cloaks:** Members are identified by cloaks dyed gray-black, symbolic of their neutrality between light (life) and shadow (death).
---

4. **The Sleeping Forge:** A buried dwarven forge‑core awakens, threatening to melt half the mountain unless pacified or repaired.
5. **A Message in Ore:** Runes inside new copper seams form words in [[Old Tongue|Old Tongue]]—someone, or something, is writing back.

### Miscellaneous Notes
- Architecture blends dwarven stone foundations with human timber facades darkened by soot.
- The constant hum of belt‑driven lifts and hammering forges forms the town’s “heartbeat.”
- Local saying: _“If the mountain hums, dig gentle.”_ — practical advice and superstition alike.

### Details:
**Name**: Hobb Tallow, scale-master of [[Brefield]]
**Race**: [[Halflings|Halfling]]
**Age**: ~50
**Gender**: Male
**Core personality**: Small, careful, and deniable — a weigh-clerk who has made a long career of not looking too closely at what crosses his scales, and is only now realizing that not-looking has a price.
**Location**: [[Falduhir]], [[Brefield]] — the **ore-scales**, the weighing station every caravan passes before it leaves town.
---
### Appearance:
- **Build & Stature:** Short even for a halfling, and stooped from decades bent over the weigh-beam. Deft, ink-stained fingers that have logged a mountain's worth of ore.
- **Hair:** Grey and receding, combed with fussy care; muttonchops gone to salt.
- **Eyes:** Watery and evasive, forever on his ledger rather than your face — though lately they dart to the road when a night comes on.
- **Apparel:** A clerk's visor and fingerless gloves, a heavy brass counterweight worn on a chain like a badge of office. Patched but proud — the uniform of a small man with a small, real authority.
- **Distinguishing Features:** The great iron **weigh-beam and scale-pan** of the station, which he tends like an altar; a locked manifest-box he keeps at his elbow.
---
### Voice & Speech:
- **Tone & Pitch:** Reedy and precise, the clipped cadence of a man who counts for a living. Cracks upward when he's frightened.
- **Mannerisms:** Quotes weights and regulations to fill silence. Fiddles with the counterweight chain when he lies. **The tell:** he can meet your eye about ore all day, but the moment the *night caravans* come up, he finds something to reweigh.
---
### Motivations & Goals:
- **Primary motivation:** Keep his post, his small standing, and his skin. He took the coin telling himself it was just a few unlogged wagons — and now can't unknow what he's part of.
- **Fears / Dangers:** That the falsified manifests surface and the **Pick-Belters Union** or honest haulers gut him for it; and, newly, that the [[House of Suits Overview|Suits]] decide a bribed clerk who *knows the route* is a loose end. He isn't sure he's too small to bother erasing — and the doubt is eating him.
- **Personal Quests or Secrets:** Bribed with small recurring Suits sums (greased through [[Magistrate Corvin Hale - Brefield|Hale]]) to wave **equipment caravans and dig crews through manifest-free, by night**, bound up to [[The Collapsed Reach|the Reach]].
---
### Background:
- **Origin:** A lifer at the scales — the kind of careful, unambitious clerk a mining town runs on and never notices.
- **History:** Weighed Brefield's ore honestly for thirty years before Hale's quiet arrangement bought him a second, dishonest ledger. The sums were small enough to accept and steady enough to trap him.
- **Current Occupation:** Master of the ore-scales — and the town's second money-thread up to the dig.
---
### Associations:
- **Allegiances & Factions:** Bought, not loyal — [[House of Suits Overview|Suits]] money routed through [[Magistrate Corvin Hale - Brefield|Hale]] and brokered by the keeper [[Wren Maddox - Brefield|Wren Maddox]].
- **Allies & Friends:** Fellow clerks and old haulers who'd turn on him in an instant if they knew.
- **Rivals & Enemies:** The **Pick-Belters Union** and honest haulers; the Suits, if they come to see him as a liability like Hale.
- **Contacts & Networks:** [[Magistrate Corvin Hale - Brefield|Hale]] (who greased him), the night-caravan crews, and the lift-route above town.
---
## Read at the Table
- A small, fussy, frightened man clinging to a small, real authority. Not a villain — a clerk who took coin to misweigh and is only now doing the math on what that makes him.
- Play the fear as *quiet dread*, not panic: he still shows up to work, still quotes weights, but he flinches at the word "flooded."
- **The second cornered witness.** Where Hale blusters then breaks, Hobb was already three-quarters broken before the party walked in.
---
## How He Breaks
- **Fear / protection offered:** *The fastest crack* — same as Hale. He's already afraid the Suits will tidy him away; promise him safety (or just voice the fear he won't) and he spills to be rid of it.
- **Evidence (the ledger / decoded manifests):** Folds on sight of proof — arguing with a document is beyond a man whose whole faith is in documents.
- **Conscience:** Slower, but real — unlike Hale he never fully talked himself clean, and a reminder of the vanished miners lands.
- **Intimidation:** Works but risks a stammering, public scene at the scales, where haulers and possibly the Suits' eyes are always about.
---
## What He Knows
- **Surface:** He waved unmanifested wagons through by night for Hale's coin. He'll admit the shaft "flooding" never squared with the *heavy crated machinery* he wasn't allowed to weigh.
- **Mid:** **Which nights** the caravans run, and roughly what they carry — crated apparatus and crews, not ore.
- **Deep:** The **lift and route** they take above town toward the condemned shaft — the road up to [[The Collapsed Reach|the Reach]].
- **Probably not:** The *why*. The ley-line purpose is above a weigh-clerk's head; he took coin to look away, not to understand.
---
### Notes & Flavor
- Self-exonerating mantra, weaker than Hale's: *"I only weigh what they set on the pan. Or don't."*
- If the party protects both Hale and Hobb, they hold two living witnesses and a personal death-clock on each — a tense, rewarding side-quest against the Suits' cleaners.
- *(For DM:)* He is deliberately *not* "written down" like Hale — too small to have earned a ledger line, which is precisely the terror he can't shake: important enough to erase, too minor to be warned.

[[Hierophant Vezra Gearbloom - Obsidian Archives|Vezra]]'s ledger is a payments record, double-entry style, written in the [[House of Suits Overview|Suits']] cipher. Decoded, it reads as a list of disbursements "for services in [[Brefield]]." The recurring name is the one that matters.
**The official:** [[Magistrate Corvin Hale - Brefield|Magistrate **Corvin Hale**]], Brefield's Mine-Warden — the office that certifies shafts safe, condemned, or flooded. Publicly a [[Belter Overview|Belter]], rode the new majority into a bigger seat, runs on "ore for honest hands, not iron ones" (anti-[[Automatons|automaton]] labor rhetoric). He's the signature on the flooded-shaft condemnation.
**Ledger entries (decoded):**
- **C. Hale, Mine-Warden** — three payments. First: "_condemnation filed, shaft III sealed to inspectors._" Second, larger: "_silence re: dig crews + equipment hauled past the scales._" Third, pending/unpaid: "_retainer — continued blindness through the season._" The unpaid third is leverage: he's in too deep to stop, not yet fully paid, and therefore squeezable.
- **[[Hobb Tallow - Brefield|"The scale-master"]]** (ore-weighing station) — small recurring sums to wave the Suits' equipment caravans through Brefield's ore-scales without manifest.
- **Vezra** — his own retainer plus an expense line for "_assessor papers + binding spirit-gum_" (matches the disguise kit), confirming the ledger is his and the forged identity was Suits-issued.
- **"Tithe to [[The Collapsed Reach|the Reach]]"** — a large lump sum routed out of Brefield marked only this way. No recipient. This is the money flowing up to the dig itself, and the phrase ties the cash directly to site III.
- **Margin note, last page:** "_Hale grows nervous. If he breaks, the tailors mend it._" — Hale is a liability the Suits are already prepared to kill. That's the party's opening: get to him before the Suits do.
**What it gives the party:** a named, corrupt, _frightened_ official they can pressure or protect; proof the shaft was deliberately falsified, not flooded; a money-trail from Brefield up to the Reach; and a second target (the scale-master) if they want to trace the equipment.

### Location Name:
The Collapsed Reach *(in Suits paperwork: "site III" / "the Reach")*
---
### Type:
Condemned Deep Shaft — active clandestine ley-siphon site
---
### Region:
[[Falduhir]] — high in the Ironreach Range above [[Brefield]], at the head of **Shaft III**, driven down through dwarven-era tunnels into ground that "hums."
---
### Geography:
- The deepest and oldest of Brefield's working veins. Officially the **sealed lower level** where miners report echoes of picks long stopped.
- Reached by switchback and a **crew-only lift** above town — a climb Magistrate [[Magistrate Corvin Hale - Brefield|Hale]] has never dared make himself. There is also the **cave mouth the [[Ashfall Squad]] used**, connected to the mine workings, which the party has marked on their Brefield map — a back door in, off the lift the Suits control.
- Below the false "flood line," the shaft opens into a worked-out gallery the conspiracy has re-timbered and lit: not a dead mine but a **running work-site.**
---
### Current State — The Cover:
- Certified **flooded and condemned** to keep inspectors out, on a **falsified survey** signed by Mine-Warden [[Magistrate Corvin Hale - Brefield|Corvin Hale]] in exchange for [[House of Suits Overview|Suits]] coin.
- It is **not** flooded. Dig crews and crated apparatus move up to it by night, hauled past Brefield's ore-scales manifest-free with the bribed scale-master [[Hobb Tallow - Brefield|Hobb Tallow]]'s blessing, brokered by the keeper [[Wren Maddox - Brefield|Wren Maddox]].
- The "flood" is a lie told twice: once to bury the dig, and once to bury the [[Ashfall Squad]] who walked in and never out.
---
### Role in the Conspiracy:
- This is a working face of the central plot (see [[Campaign Premise]]): the conspiracy is **fracturing and sealing the ley lines** that carry magic through Baltun'ia — to choke magic, break the [[Automatons|automatons]], and revive [[King Rangrim the Unyielding|Rangrim]]'s imperial order.
- [[Vezra's Room|Vezra]]'s letter: *"the third line is nearly sealed. Two more and the Reach goes quiet for good."* Money out of Brefield routes here as a **"tithe to the Reach."**
- **Corroborated in play (Session 8, [[8. Oils - 6-29-26|Oils]]):** the automaton Oils placed "the Reach" as an *objective* the [[House of Suits Casino|Casino]] set talks around, and recalled a private meeting where several groups carved up a map with a man matching [[Commander Taylor]] among them and the Spade standing watch.
---
### What Is Actually Down There:
- **The Ley-Siphon Engine.** At the deep face, driven into an exposed **ley convergence**, stands a purpose-built conspiracy apparatus — a modern arcane machine, not a dwarven relic. Think a great gimbaled drill-head ringed by **capping-rods** and glass ley-conduits that run milk-blue when the line is flowing and choke to a sick grey as it seals. It does not mine ore; it **fractures the line and clamps the wound shut.** Its low, wrong hum is the "echo of picks long stopped" the town legend describes.
- **The Cost, Made Visible.** Where the engine has already bitten, the stone is *dead* — no ley-spark leaks, no glow. Spellcasters near the face feel their magic **stutter and thin** (a fine at-the-table dread: rising disadvantage on casting the deeper they go, or a spell fizzling as a line is capped). This is the endgame in miniature — the party feels what a sealed world would be like.
- **The Purpose of the Site:** seal the **third line** (nearly done) and stage for the fourth. Shutting this engine down buys time and evidence; it does not end the conspiracy — there are more lines, and other sites.
---
### Guardians & Opposition:
- **Site Overseer** — a [[House of Suits Overview|Suits]] operative running the face; cold, procedural, treats the dead squad as a solved logistics problem. The person who *ordered* the second flooding.
- **Conspiracy casters** — a knot of Suits mages and hired **[[The Sable Coven|Sable Coven]]** hands who tend and defend the engine; the necromantic reek some feel near ley-work clings to them. They know the machine's failsafes.
- **Dig crews & muscle** — conditioned or well-paid laborers and guards; not fanatics, but they'll fight to protect the payroll and the secret.
- **The mountain itself** — flood-gates that *can* be opened for real (the cover made true as a weapon), unstable re-timbered galleries, and the spring-thaw "Shifting" overhead.
---
### The Ashfall Squad — What the Party Finds:
- **They are all dead.** Janos's vanished unit reached the mountains through the cave mouth, walked into the dig, and were sealed in — the shaft "flooded the very next day" was them being buried, not water.
- **The evidence remains, and it is damning:**
- Their bodies where they fell — not eaten, not risen, just *executed and left*, because the Suits treat cleanup as paperwork.
- A squad member's **field log / last entries** describing the engine, the capping of a line, and the order that came down to seal the shaft with them inside.
- **Dog-tags or unit insignia** Janos can name — the gut-punch confirmation, no rescue at the end of it.
- A **Suits disposal order** (or the Overseer's ledger line) that names the flooding as deliberate and ties it up the chain — proof, and a name to carry back.
- **The turn:** the party came to *save* them. There is no one to save — only to avenge, to prove, and to stop the next line. Let the room be quiet before it's a fight.
---
### Potential Adventure & Plot Hooks:
- **The clock:** *"before the season turns"* — the spring thaw / "the Shifting." Two lines left; the third seals soon.
- **Two ways in:** the crew-only lift (needs a forged pass, a caravan to hide in, or Hobb's route) versus the Ashfall cave mouth (off the Suits' control, but unknown ground).
- **Getting in past a condemnation that's a lie:** forged flooding, posted guards, a lift that only runs for known crews — everything the party learned from Hale, Hobb, and Wren pays off here.
- **The choice at the face:** sabotage/destroy the engine (loud, buys time, may collapse the shaft), quietly *steal its plans and a conduit-core* (evidence for the wider fight), or free/reverse a capped line (dangerous, arcane, spectacular).
- **Getting out** as the party's meddling triggers the real flood-gates — the cover made true beneath them.
---
### Miscellaneous Notes:
- The in-town legend (echoes below, vanished miners) is the rumor-layer over the real dig; "**the mountain remembers every cut**" is truer than the townsfolk know — but the wound is a *machine's*, not a ghost's.
- Ties every Brefield thread together: [[Magistrate Corvin Hale - Brefield|Hale]]'s signature, [[Hobb Tallow - Brefield|Hobb]]'s scales, [[Wren Maddox - Brefield|Wren]]'s tithe, [[Vezra's Room|Vezra]]'s letter, [[Commander Taylor]]'s map, and Janos's [[Ashfall Squad]] all lead here.
- *(For DM to stat:)* the Overseer and lead caster, the engine's HP/failsafes and what breaking it *does* to the ley line and everyone standing on it, and the flood-gate hazard as a chase clock on the way out.

### Name:
The Splintered Snake
### Type:
Inn & Lodging House (with a ground-floor taproom)
### Location:
[[Brefield]], [[Falduhir]] — off the lower end of **Smelters' Row**, where the tavern district thins into miners' boarding.
---
### Description:
- A tall, narrow timber lodging house wedged against the rock, its soot-darkened front leaning over the switchback street. Three floors of let rooms above a low, smoke-stained taproom.
- The sign is a coiled snake split lengthwise down a wood grain that never took paint right — locals say the carver's hand slipped and he left it, and the name stuck.
- Warm and close inside: the 26-hour shift rotation means there's always someone asleep upstairs and someone drinking downstairs. Bells from the **9-Bell Town** mark the hours through the walls. Smells of coal-smoke, wet wool, and barley.
---
### Lore & Role in Brefield:
- A working travelers' house — cheap beds for transient labor, drummers, and the occasional inspector or "assessor" passing through on Benton business. Anonymous by design; nobody asks a guest's trade.
- That anonymity is exactly why a [[House of Suits Overview|Suits]] agent chose it. The party lodges here — and so did [[Hierophant Vezra Gearbloom - Obsidian Archives|Vezra]], **two doors down the same hall**, watching them the whole time.
- (Session 10) On returning to Brefield, the party checked in here with the rescued dragon [[Tir'nael]] in tow — [[Wren Maddox - Brefield|Wren]] took a twenty-gold deposit and five gold a night, and [[Odatina]] signed a waiver for any damage. Realizing the reducing magic on Tir'nael would soon fail, they moved him to the stables out back.
---
### Ownership & Management:
- Run day-to-day by [[Wren Maddox - Brefield|Wren Maddox]], a harried keeper who values quiet custom and asks no questions — or so it seems. She didn't fail to notice the man in the room down the hall. She **rented him the room and watched the party for him.** The keeper is the [[House of Suits Overview|Suits']] eyes in this house.
---
### Notable Features & Rooms:
- **[[Vezra's Room]]** — the let room Vezra took two doors down from the party's. Abandoned mid-cover, never tossed, still holding his disguise kit, field map, letter, and coded ledger. *(The scene the party is about to search — see the room note for clue tiers and the desk trap.)*
---
### Plot Hooks & Adventure Seeds:
- The dread beat: the party's surveillant wasn't watching from across the city — he was **down the hall the whole stay.** And the answer to *"who else here was paid to look the other way?"* is the keeper herself — [[Wren Maddox - Brefield|Wren Maddox]] wasn't paid to look away; she was paid to look.
- The guest ledger and Wren's key-ring tie her to [[Vezra's Room]] — and to [[Magistrate Corvin Hale - Brefield|Hale]]'s door, whom she also watches. Catch her in either and both threads open.
---
### Notable NPCs:
- **[[Wren Maddox - Brefield|Wren Maddox]]**, Innkeeper *(Human, ~30)*
→ The keeper who let [[Hierophant Vezra Gearbloom - Obsidian Archives|Vezra]] his room and watched the party for him. Secretly the [[House of Suits Overview|Suits']] in-town courier and the watcher on [[Magistrate Corvin Hale - Brefield|Hale]]. The safe house was never safe.

**Setup**
- [[Hierophant Vezra Gearbloom - Obsidian Archives|Vezra]]'s let room at the party's own inn, **[[The Splintered Snake]]**, two doors down the hall. The mild "mine-safety assessor" who took this room and the fiery [[Cogwrights Collective Overview|Cogwright]] **Hierophant** the party knew in [[Voxiu]] are one man — and both faces are masks over a [[House of Suits Overview|House of Suits]] agent. The party has pulled that mask off.
- Left as-is, not tossed — he never returned after being made. Door unlatched, bed made, wine skinning over on the desk, coat on the hook, travel case latched at foot of bed.
- He was told to _burn this_ and didn't. Party survives on his bad luck.
**Clue tiers (3-clue rule — a missed check still points the same way)**
- _No check:_ Coat holds disguise kit, spirit-gum, forged "mine-safety assessor" papers → confirms a planted professional, cover tied to the shaft. Papers also contain the ledger cipher key. Tucked in the kit: a Cogwright spiral-cog token and a spare brass feather for an automaton sparrow → the "assessor" is the Voxiu Hierophant **[[Hierophant Vezra Gearbloom - Obsidian Archives|Vezra Gearbloom]]**. The machine-rights preacher was the cover; the Suits agent was the man.
- _Investigation DC 12:_ Travel case (unlocked), false bottom → **field map**: range marked with Suits' sigil (bisected circle); site **III** circled in red, labeled "_the Reach._" Rune-numerals quietly track the ley lines.
- _Investigation/Perception DC 15 (auto if desk pried):_ Desk panel → **letter** + **coded ledger**. Cipher cracks on Arcana/Investigation DC 13, or instant if disguise kit found.
**The igniter**
- Desk panel rigged. Thieves' Tools DC 15 to disarm.
- Fail → green alchemical bead sparks, letter + ledger catch fire. Dex save DC 13 to snatch **one** of the two; other is lost.
- Map is safe in the case regardless — destination always survives.
- Clean disarm → keep all three.
**The letter (handout)**
> _V— The diggers say the third line is nearly sealed. Two more and the Reach goes quiet for good — then the rest of Baltun'ia drinks from our cup, or doesn't drink at all. Your work in [[Brefield]] is to keep the curious blind. The flooded shaft holds, the condemnation papers are filed, [Hale] earned his coin. If the contractors keep sniffing, walk them out gentle. If gentle fails — we have other tailors. Be at the Reach before the season turns. Burn this. —T._
- Seeds ley lines ("third line nearly sealed"), sets clock ("before the season turns"), hooks ledger ("Hale earned his coin"), keeps "—T." / "tailors" ambiguous (Taylor? or Suits motif?). Don't resolve here.
**Personal stake**
- Thin dossier tucked with ledger: surveillance notes on party since Voxiu, sketch of one PC, margin note flagging one as "_a problem_" / "_possibly useful._"
- Chill = he was watching from two doors down, not across the city.
**Takeaways for the party**
- Reveal: the "assessor" is [[Hierophant Vezra Gearbloom - Obsidian Archives|Vezra Gearbloom]] — Voxiu's Cogwright preacher is a [[House of Suits Overview|Suits]] agent
- Destination: [[The Collapsed Reach|the Reach]] / site III
- Clock: before the season turns
- Money-trail: [[Magistrate Corvin Hale - Brefield|Magistrate Corvin Hale]] (corrupt, frightened, Suits-marked for removal) → up to the Reach
- Mystery seed: "lines being sealed"
- Dread: surveilled from down the hall, under a "Tailor"

### Details:
**Name**: Magistrate Corvin Hale, Mine-Warden of [[Brefield]]
**Race**: [[Humans|Human]]
**Age**: 54
**Gender**: Male
**Core personality**: Officious, self-justifying, and quietly terrified. A paper-man who certifies other men's danger from behind a desk; bluster on the surface, a cornered animal underneath.
**Location**: [[Falduhir]], [[Brefield]] — the Mine-Warden's office
---
### Appearance:
- **Build & Stature:** Soft and well-fed, slightly stooped from a life over ledgers rather than ore. Soft, uncalloused hands — remarkable on a mine-warden, and the first thing a miner notices about him.
- **Hair:** Thinning, pomaded flat, gone iron-gray at the temples.
- **Eyes:** Pale and restless — keep flicking to the door and the window mid-sentence.
- **Skin:** Pallid for a mining town (he rarely goes down a shaft), with the broken capillaries of a steady drinker.
- **Apparel:** Overdressed for the office — a velvet-trimmed coat too fine for the work, ink-stained cuffs, the Warden's brass seal-ring he uses to stamp a shaft's fate.
- **Distinguishing Features:** A decanter always within arm's reach; the official condemnation seal never far from it.
---
### Voice & Speech:
- **Tone & Pitch:** Officious and a touch too loud when bluffing; drops to a dry, careful rasp once he's frightened.
- **Mannerisms:** Deflects to procedure — *"The paperwork is in order, the shaft is flooded, good day."* Refills his glass to buy a beat of thought. Glances at the door or window between phrases. **The tell:** he isn't watching the party. He's watching for the Suits.
---
### Motivations & Goals:
- **Primary motivation:** Survive — and keep telling himself he's only a clerk who condemned a shaft, nothing more. Publicly, advance his standing as a [[Belter Overview|Belter]] on the new majority.
- **Fears / Dangers:** That the [[House of Suits Overview|Suits]] have *written him down*. He's seen what that ledger margin means — **written-down men get erased.** He knows, somewhere he won't look, that he's expendable.
- **Personal Quests or Secrets:** He signed off **Shaft III** as flooded and condemned on a **falsified survey**, to keep inspectors out. He took **three Suits payments** (the third retainer still unpaid), and greased the **scale-master** so equipment and dig crews could pass the ore-scales by night, manifest-free.
---
### Background:
- **Origin:** A bureaucrat who climbed by paperwork, never by pickwork — the rare man in [[Brefield]] who got soft hands honestly.
- **History:** Rose to **Mine-Warden**, the office whose signature certifies a shaft *safe*, *condemned*, or *flooded*. Won a larger seat on the **new Belter majority** running on *"ore for honest hands, not iron ones"* — anti-[[Automatons|automaton]] labor rhetoric that plays well in the [[Belter Overview|Belter]]-leaning mining wards.
- **Current Occupation:** Mine-Warden of [[Brefield]] and sitting [[Belter Overview|Belter]] officeholder. His seal sealed Shaft III.
---
### Associations:
- **Allegiances & Factions:** Publicly [[Belter Overview|Belters]] (new majority). Privately owned by the [[House of Suits Overview|House of Suits]] — three payments deep, and already flagged in the ledger margin for *"mending"* should he crack.
- **Allies & Friends:** Few he'd trust. He leans on rank and procedure instead of people.
- **Rivals & Enemies:** The [[House of Suits Overview|Suits]], who hold his leash and may decide to cut it; the honest inspectors he's kept off Shaft III; the local **Pick-Belters Union**, who would gut him if his fraud surfaced.
- **Contacts & Networks:** The **scale-master** he bribed (a second thread the party can trace); a **Suits courier/contact** here in town — a face the party may already have brushed past — through whom payments route *"up to the Reach"* as a tithe.
---
## Read at the Table
- Overdresses for the office; soft hands for a mine-warden; drinks at his desk.
- **Bluster first, sweats second.** Deflects to procedure before he deflects to anything else.
- **The tell:** he keeps glancing at the door and the window. He's not watching the party — he's watching for the Suits.
---
## How He Breaks *(pick the pressure the party brings)*
- **Evidence (ledger / letter):** Folds fast. Seeing his own name in the Suits' hand confirms his worst fear — that they *wrote him down*, and written-down men get erased. Denial to bargaining in a single beat.
- **Fear / protection offered:** *The fastest crack.* If the party makes him believe the Suits mean to kill him (they do), he flips for safety, not conscience. The phrase *"other tailors"* lands hardest on him.
- **Intimidation / violence:** Works, but backfires — a terrified Hale spills something, then bolts or barricades, risking the **Suits watcher** noticing the commotion and moving on him *early*.
- **Bribery / appeal to conscience:** *Slowest.* He's greedy and self-justifying — *"I condemned a shaft, that's all. I didn't dig anything."* Won't move on money alone (he already has Suits money), but conscience can be a tiebreaker once he's already scared.
---
## What He Knows *(gate the deeper items behind harder pressure)*
- **Surface:** The shaft isn't flooded — it was **condemned on a falsified survey** so inspectors stay out. He signed it; he tells himself that's the whole of his crime.
- **Mid:** Equipment and dig crews move through the **ore-scales by night, manifest-free**; he greased the scale-master to look away. He can name the scale-master.
- **Deep:** The work is happening up at **[[The Collapsed Reach|the Reach]]**. He's never been — too scared — but he's heard the crews talk about *"the lines going quiet"* and *"waking the old engines."* He doesn't understand the **ley lines**; he can only quote the phrase — which lets the party hear it from a second mouth and start connecting it.
- **Deepest *(fear-flip only)*:** His **Suits contact** in town — a courier or a face the party may have already passed — and the detail that payments route *"up to the Reach"* as a tithe. Confirms the money-trail in person.
---
## If the Party Reaches Him First
- Confirmation that the shaft is a cover — **in the words of the man who signed it.**
- The **scale-master** as a second thread (trace the equipment caravans).
- **[[The Collapsed Reach|the Reach]]** named again, plus *"lines going quiet"* / *"old engines"* from an **independent source.**
- A **living witness** — leverage against the Brefield [[Belter Overview|Belters]] and proof the dig ties to the new majority.
- A clock made personal: Hale is **marked for death**, so protecting him becomes its own time-pressure side-quest.
---
## If the Suits Reach Him First *(party too slow, or tips their hand)*
- Hale turns up **dead** — staged as a suicide or a "mine inspection accident," neatly condemning his own death the way he condemned the shaft.
- The party arrives to a cooling body and a scrubbed office — they lose the witness but gain urgency and a fresh *"we're being outrun"* stake.
- **Salvage:** leave one thing the cleaners missed — a hidden second ledger page, or a note naming the courier — so the thread survives his death.
---
## Running Him — Complication
A **Suits watcher** is already on Hale. Pressuring him in public, loudly, or twice risks the watcher reporting in and triggering the kill *early*. Reward the party for being quiet and quick; punish a smash-and-grab.
---
### Notes & Flavor
- Self-exonerating mantra: *"I condemned a shaft, that's all. I didn't dig anything."*
- Stock deflection: *"The paperwork is in order, the shaft is flooded, good day."*
- He genuinely hasn't admitted to himself that he's expendable — denial is his last comfort.

**Core personality**: Blunt with people, tender with beasts; unhurried, watchful, and quietly stubborn. A [[Sable Coven Overview|Sable Coven]] Greenbrew's grim mercy in a body that would rather be in a stall than a room.
**Location**: [[Falduhir]] — [[Brefield]], the animal ward of the **Sable Coven Clinic** (and every stable and shaft‑head that will have her)
---
### Appearance:
- **Build & Stature:** Short and thick‑set even for a dwarf, with the rolling, bow‑legged gait of someone who has spent a century among draught animals.
- **Hair:** Iron‑gray, worked into thick braids with dried sage, a twist of copper wire, and a single canary feather woven behind one ear.
- **Eyes:** Mossy green shot with amber — slow to move, quick to read a limp or a flinch.
- **Skin:** Weathered and liniment‑stained; her broad hands are faintly stained green‑blue at the knuckles from a lifetime handling ley‑touched herbs.
- **Apparel:** A gray‑black Coven cloak worn thin at the hem, oilcloth apron, and a heavy satchel of salves, splints, and twine.
- **Distinguishing Features:** Both forearms are laddered with small deliberate scars — a Coven scar‑binding, but where her order counts *people* saved, Vondra counts *beasts*. She carries a squat brass whistle and a coiled lead‑rope at her belt.
---
### Voice & Speech:
- **Tone & Pitch:** Low, gravelly, and even — the voice of someone used to calming a panicking half‑ton animal.
- **Mannerisms:** Breaks off mid‑sentence to murmur to whatever creature is nearby; delivers hard truths to people with the same flat kindness she uses on a dying mule. Says "*easy now*" to beasts and clients alike.
---
### Motivations & Goals:
- **Primary motivation:** Keep the beasts alive. The working animals of [[Brefield]] — pit ponies, mules, cave‑dogs, and the mine‑canaries — are her whole flock, and lately they are sickening and panicking near the lower shafts in ways no colic or bad air explains. She wants someone with fewer scruples and more freedom than a healer to find out **why**.
- **Fears / Dangers:** That whatever is turning the animals against the deep will reach the town's children next; and, more privately, that she will die the way most witnesses in Brefield do — dismissed as a crank right up until the cave‑in.
- **Personal Quests or Secrets:** Vondra can *speak with animals*, and she has been listening. The pit ponies refuse to descend past a certain gallery; the canaries she sends down come back wrong or not at all; the beasts describe, in their blunt animal way, a **"cold that hums"** and a wind with no source coming up from the sealed lower level. She has quietly mapped where the sickness radiates from — and every line points at [[The Collapsed Reach]]. She is a witness with damning testimony and no one who will credit it, because *the pony‑doctor talks to her animals.*
---
### Background:
- **Origin:** Born in a herding hold in the pine valleys south of Brefield, among drovers who moved stock along the old ridge roads.
- **History:** The [[Sable Coven Overview|Sable Coven]] took her in as a Greenbrew after a mine collapse she helped dig out as a girl; she trained in leyline‑touched herblore and swore the Oath of Ash and Rose. She drifted up to Brefield years ago to treat beasts after a bad thaw‑season and simply never left — the animals needed her, and the Coven's creed of *healing without borders* suited a town that fed on grudges.
- **Current Occupation:** Greenbrew of the Sable Coven, running the animal side of the town clinic — the only stock‑doctor for a day's ride, and by long habit the one person in Brefield everyone is willing to owe a favor.
---
### Associations:
- **Allegiances & Factions:** The [[Sable Coven Overview|Sable Coven]], openly. She takes the Oath at its word: she mends a [[Benton Brothers Mining Co.]] hauler‑team and a [[Pick‑Belters Union|Pick‑Belter]] drover's mule in the same afternoon and refuses to be drawn on the politics of either. Reveres [[Biros]], to whom she leaves an offering of loam and a lock of horsehair at [[Stoneshield Chapel]].
- **Allies & Friends:** **Marit Sedge**, the halfling quartermaster, quietly slips her poultice supplies off the books; **Eldr Stonegleam**, the guilt‑haunted Runekeeper engineer, is one of the few who takes her warnings about the deep seriously.
- **Rivals & Enemies:** [[Benton Brothers Mining Co.]] auditors resent the free care she gives union beasts; anyone tied to the [[House of Suits Overview|House of Suits]] would want the stock‑doctor silenced outright if they understood what her animals have told her — she does not yet know she is dangerous.
- **Contacts & Networks:** Pick‑Belter drovers, the Biros priests at [[Stoneshield Chapel]], and half the children of Brefield, who bring her injured strays for a copper and a story.
---
### Notes & Flavor
- Catchphrase to skittish beasts *and* nervous clients: "*Easy now. Easy. I've got you.*"
- Keeps a lame three‑legged cave‑dog named **Slag** at her heels; it will not go near the lower shaft roads, and she trusts its refusal more than any Benton safety report.
- Diagnoses people the way she diagnoses horses — she'll take a party's measure by how they treat Slag before she tells them a single useful thing.
- Distrusts magitech medicine and "clank" enforcers on instinct, but treats a wounded [[Automatons|automaton]] without comment if one is brought to her: *"Something that hurts is something I mend. That's the whole of it."*

### Details:
**Name**: Wren Maddox, keeper of [[The Splintered Snake]]
**Race**: [[Humans|Human]]
**Age**: ~30
**Gender**: Female *(swap freely — the role, not the gender, is what matters)*
**Core personality**: Forgettable on purpose. Warm, harried, useful — the innkeeper who remembers your ale but never your business, and asks no questions because she already has every answer.
**Location**: [[Falduhir]], [[Brefield]] — behind the taproom bar at [[The Splintered Snake]], off the lower end of Smelters' Row.
---
### Appearance:
- **Build & Stature:** Wiry and quick, always mid-task — wiping a glass, hauling a keg, three things at once. The perpetual motion of a working keeper reads as *harmless* long before it reads as *watchful*.
- **Hair:** Mouse-brown, pinned up out of the way and forever coming loose; nothing anyone would describe twice.
- **Eyes:** Quick and light, they take in a room in one pass and give nothing back. **The tell, if you're looking:** her eyes reach the stairs and the room-down-the-hall a half-beat before anyone climbs them.
- **Apparel:** A publican's apron over plain wool, sleeves shoved to the elbow. A ring of let-room keys at her belt — every door in the house on one loop, [[Vezra's Room]] included.
- **Distinguishing Features:** None. That is the feature. She is precisely as memorable as the party needs her not to be.
---
### Voice & Speech:
- **Tone & Pitch:** Brisk, friendly, a little frayed — the voice of someone who's been on her feet since the third bell.
- **Mannerisms:** Talks *while* working, never quite stopping — which keeps every conversation short and shallow. Deflects with hospitality: another round, a fresh log on the fire, "you'll want breakfast before that climb." **Her real trade she does with her ears, not her mouth.**
---
### Motivations & Goals:
- **Primary motivation:** Keep the pipeline quiet and the coin moving. She is the local hand through whom [[House of Suits Overview|Suits]] money routes **"up to [[The Collapsed Reach|the Reach]]"** as a tithe — and the eyes the Suits keep on their liabilities in town.
- **Fears / Dangers:** Being *seen* — the whole value of her is invisibility. If the party makes her, she's worth nothing to the Suits and knows too much to be left loose.
- **Personal Quests or Secrets:**
- She rented [[Hierophant Vezra Gearbloom - Obsidian Archives|Vezra]] the room two doors from the party and **watched them for him** — she is the reason the surveillance was *down the hall the whole stay.*
- She is the **Suits watcher on [[Magistrate Corvin Hale - Brefield|Hale]].** Pressure him loudly, twice, or in the open and *she* is who reports it — and the move to "mend" him starts with a word from her.
---
### Background:
- **Origin:** A local enough face that no one recalls her arriving — which is either true or the best-kept part of the cover.
- **History:** Took over the day-to-day of [[The Splintered Snake]] years back, an anonymous house for transient labor where nobody asks a guest's trade. That anonymity is exactly what made it useful to the [[House of Suits Overview|House of Suits]], and made her their natural instrument: the keeper who sees every guest and is remembered by none.
- **Current Occupation:** Innkeeper of the Splintered Snake by trade; Suits courier and watcher by arrangement.
---
### Associations:
- **Allegiances & Factions:** [[House of Suits Overview|House of Suits]] cell operating in Brefield — bought and *trusted*, which is rarer and more dangerous than merely bought.
- **Allies & Friends:** Keeps none she'd risk anything for. Her network is transactional top to bottom.
- **Rivals & Enemies:** The party, the instant they realize their host was their surveillant; the honest Pick-Belters, if the pipeline ever surfaces.
- **Contacts & Networks:** [[Magistrate Corvin Hale - Brefield|Hale]] (whom she watches), the scale-master [[Hobb Tallow - Brefield|Hobb Tallow]] (whose bribes she brokers), and — up the chain — [[Vezra's Room|Vezra]] before his cover broke, and the courier route up the mountain.
---
## Read at the Table
- The keeper they've already met, already trusted, already slept under the roof of. Play her *helpful* — right up until the party looks back and realizes every helpful thing pointed them somewhere she wanted them.
- She never stops working; the busyness is the disguise. She learns more pouring drinks than most spies learn breaking in.
- **The reveal should land as a betrayal of an assumed safe place** — "the keeper" was never a bystander.
---
## What She Knows *(gate the deeper items behind harder pressure)*
- **Surface:** Every guest who's passed through, who visited whom, who's asked after the party. She rented Vezra his room and can be caught in that if the party finds the guest ledger.
- **Mid:** She routes the Suits tithe "up to the Reach" and knows the courier hand-off — where the money goes, if not the last mile.
- **Deep:** She is the watcher on Hale, reporting his nerves up the chain. Making her confirm this tells the party their own pressure on Hale is what will get him killed.
- **Deepest:** The shape of the Suits cell in Brefield and the up-mountain route — a live link to the operation, if she can be turned, taken, or made to run to someone useful.
---
## When She's Made *(party catches the keeper)*
- **If she has warning:** she doesn't fight — she *vanishes into the town traffic* she blends with so well, and gets word up the chain, accelerating the move on Hale.
- **If cornered clean:** she'll trade — she's an operative, not a believer, and has no intention of being the one "written down." What she sells is real but self-serving.
- **Salvage either way:** even if she slips, the guest ledger and the key-ring tie her to Vezra's room and to Hale's door — the thread survives her.
---
### Notes & Flavor
- Working name — rename freely. If kept, the sinister music is that "Wren" is a small, plain, overlooked bird.
- She is the answer to the Splintered Snake's dangling question — *"who else here was paid to look the other way?"* It was the keeper, and she wasn't paid to look away. She was paid to look.
- *(For DM:)* Decide whether her being made is what tips the watch and triggers the Suits' move on Hale — the cleanest way to fuse the two threads into one clock.

**Core personality**: Warm, unflappable, and quietly shrewd — a host who makes everyone feel looked-after while missing nothing said at her tables.
**Location**: [[Caford]], [[Falduhir]] — [[The Pigskin]].
---
### Appearance:
- **Build & Stature:** Solid and settled, built for standing behind a bar for years without tiring; unhurried in every movement.
- **Plating:** Worn to a soft, hand-polished sheen at the edges — the patina of long, comfortable use rather than neglect.
- **Eyes:** Steady, attentive lenses that warm when she's decided she likes you.
- **Apparel:** A publican's apron and a few small, sentimental trinkets kept about her frame — gifts, most of them.
- **Distinguishing Features:** Keeps the house's one **reserved table** as if it were a throne; there is almost always a cluster of trusted hands within a nod of her.
---
### Voice & Speech:
- **Tone & Pitch:** Even, unhurried, hospitable — the voice of someone who has calmed a hundred arguments before they started.
- **Mannerisms:** Calls patrons by warm, generic endearments; asks after you before she asks anything of you; deflects hard questions with another round.
---
### Motivations & Goals:
- **Primary motivation:** Keep the Pigskin a **safe door** for Caford's automatons and an honest table in a hard city — and keep the favor-ledger balanced.
- **Fears / Dangers:** The city's anti-automaton temper turning on her house; being forced to *pick a side* and lose her neutral ground.
- **Personal Quests or Secrets:** None dark — her leverage is simply that she knows nearly everyone worth knowing among Caford's automatons, and remembers every favor owed in both directions.
---
### Background:
- **Origin:** A [[Automatons|construct]] who found her footing in [[Caford]] and built something rarer than a tavern — a *welcome*.
- **History:** Over years the Pigskin became the automaton community's hiring-hall and quiet exchange, with Karen as its keeper. She vouched the party in only after confirming they were the ones who'd aided [[Oils - The Pigskin|Oils]]'s escape from the [[House of Suits Casino|House of Suits]].
- **Current Occupation:** Host, fixer, and favor-broker of [[The Pigskin]].

- **Rivals & Enemies:** Anyone who threatens the Pigskin's welcome — Reclamation-Site zealotry, or a faction trying to turn her tables into a front.
- **Contacts & Networks:** Deep roots in Caford's automaton community; can quietly *find* a person, a berth, or an answer within the city.
---
### Notes & Flavor
- The reserved table is her office; sit only when invited.
- Helps for goodwill, not gold — and remembers exactly what she's owed.
- "First a drink. Then your trouble." *(Working catchphrase — swap freely.)*

- **Distinguishing Features:** Carries an **observer's plate** (it recorded the [[Ashfall Squad]]'s route into the mountains) and a rare **stone slate** — a device that stores information and memories, and lets him appraise the arcane weight of an object.
---
### Voice & Speech:
- **Tone & Pitch:** Soft, precise, a little tired; warms when he's being thanked and deflects it.
- **Mannerisms:** Draws close and drops his voice for anything important; studies an object with the slate before he'll say a word about it.
---
### Motivations & Goals:
- **Primary motivation:** To be *useful* and to repay what he owes — he completed the task Janos set him even after it turned deadly, and lost a friend doing it.

- Studies everything with the stone slate before speaking — a beat of silence, then the truth.
- Gave most of his coin away and had to be talked into keeping the rest.

### Type:
Automaton Tavern — haven, hiring-hall, and quiet information-exchange
### Location:
[[Caford]], [[Falduhir]] — in the city's automaton quarter, a short walk from the grand central arena and the [[Vault Singers' Church]].
---
### Description:
- A warm, low-beamed tavern that never quite goes quiet: the clink of tankards, the tick and whir of automaton joints, and easy talk between **[[Automatons|automatons]], [[Dwarves|dwarves]], and [[Humans|humans]]** sharing the same benches — a rarer sight than it should be.
- A single **reserved table** sits apart, always kept for the house's host; a private **back room** off the main floor is offered to those with matters best not overheard.
- The air smells of hot fat, spiced ale, and machine-oil. To an automaton walking in, the Pigskin reads instantly as *safe* — one of the few doors in a fortress city that opens to their kind without a second look.
---
### Lore & Role in Caford:
- [[Caford]] is a fortress and trade hub with a hard edge toward automatons — the shadow of the [[Automatons|Reclamation Sites]] hangs over every construct who works its walls. The Pigskin is the counterweight: a place where an automaton is a patron, not property.
- Over time it has become an **informal hiring-hall and information-exchange** for Caford's automaton community — where an out-of-work construct can find a berth, and where those who need discreet, capable help can be quietly pointed to it.
- It is neutral ground on purpose. The house trades in **favors and goodwill**, not politics, and keeps its welcome by keeping its mouth shut.
---
### Ownership & Management:
- **Host & fixer:** **[[Karen - The Pigskin|Karen]]** — an [[Automatons|automaton]] who keeps the reserved table, runs the house through a handful of trusted subordinates, and vouches (or doesn't) for who gets help. It was Karen who confirmed the party as the ones who had aided [[Oils - The Pigskin|Oils]]'s escape from the [[House of Suits Casino|House of Suits]], and Karen who put the two together.
- **Lodger:** **[[Oils - The Pigskin|Oils]]**, the small investigator, has a room here since returning from the mines — coin all but spent, given a berth on the house.
---
### Regular Patrons & Visitors:
- Caford's automatons first and foremost, plus the dwarves and humans who treat them as equals; travelers who've heard it's the honest table in a hard city.
---
### Plot Hooks & Adventure Seeds:
- **A door that stays open.** The Pigskin is a haven the party can return to between forays — to re-hire [[Oils - The Pigskin|Oils]], to rest, or to ask Karen to quietly *find* something or someone in Caford.
- **The favor economy.** Karen helps for goodwill, not gold; help given here is remembered, and help *received* is expected to be repaid in kind.
- **Under the city's edge.** With Reclamation-Site prejudice pressing on Caford's automatons, the Pigskin is one spark away from becoming a flashpoint — or a refuge — in the wider fight over automaton rights.
---
### Notable NPCs:
- **[[Karen - The Pigskin|Karen]]**, host & fixer *([[Automatons|Automaton]])*
→ Runs the house and the favor-ledger; a neutral, well-connected broker who helped the party because they'd earned it. Knows who's who among Caford's automatons.
- **[[Oils - The Pigskin|Oils]]**, investigator & relic-appraiser *([[Automatons|Automaton]], small)*
→ Lodging here since the mines; a loyal, re-hireable ally who reads relics and memories with his stone slate.

### Details:
**Name**: Felix Tanner *(a chosen name; his true designation is older than any tongue left to pronounce it)*
**Race**: [[Automatons|Automaton]] — ancient, Archivist-Class
**Age**: Unknown; a relic of the Ancients, from before the First Age. Ageless.
**Gender**: Undefined — presents as a weathered old man.
**Core personality**: Patient, watchful, cryptic — a sentinel's caution wrapped around a scholar's soul. The conscience of the order and the keeper of its most dangerous truths.
**Location**: [[Caford]], [[Falduhir]] — the core of the [[Vault Singers' Church]], and its rear yard.
---
### Appearance:
- **Build & Stature:** To those who've glimpsed him — and in [[Oils - The Pigskin|Oils]]'s memory — a stooped, haggard old man in a nest of stacked boxes and blankets. Beneath that impression: an ancient automaton frame, patinaed and worn, built to an archivist's shape rather than a warrior's.
- **Plating:** **Memory-etched** — his shell is a living autobiography, dense with personal runes and Ancient-Tongue glyphs recording all he has kept.
- **Eyes:** Dim arcane light behind a weathered faceplate; warm, not hostile, once trust is won.
- **Distinguishing Features:** A **sensor array** far finer than any organic sense — he named the party's [[Gnomes|gnome]] by "scent" through a fence. An arcane **core whose pulse registers as necromantic** to those who feel magic: the vault's heartbeat.
---
### Voice & Speech:
- **Tone & Pitch:** Low, unhurried, mechanically precise; from the dark it lands as a warning-growl.
- **Mannerisms:** **Sniffs / scans the air before he speaks or trusts.** Talks of the ley lines the way others talk of the weather. Under strain or deep memory he lapses into the [[Automatons|Ancient Tongue]] or a harmonic hum — the same "song" the Vaultsingers are named for.
---
### Motivations & Goals:
- **Primary motivation:** **Preserve.** To bank every magical secret in the vault before the [[Campaign Premise|ley lines are sealed]] and magic — and automaton life with it — goes dark.
- **Secondary:** To keep the [[Vaultsingers Overview|Vaultsingers]] honest — a deliberate **check** on an order that could so easily hoard, weaponize, or worship what it was meant only to guard.
- **Fears / Dangers:** The lines fully closed. The vault's knowledge seized by the [[Campaign Premise|conspiracy]] or the [[House of Suits Overview|House of Suits]]. Being made, once more, into a weapon or a tool.
- **Personal Quests or Secrets:** He is the vault's **living power source**, there of his own free will. He carries **ley-line secrets** he will not share lightly — and knowledge of the [[Ashfall Squad]] and the flooded mine that he *can* be persuaded to part with, guardedly, by those who prove they are not of the circle drilling the mountains.
---
### Background:
- **Origin:** A construct of the **Ancients**, built as an **Archivist-Class** keeper — a "Voice-of-Ley," made to listen to the lines and remember. He woke (or woke again) at a **convergence of ley lines**.
- **History:** Wandered a world that had forgotten his makers until he found the [[Vaultsingers Overview|Vaultsingers]] — and gave himself to their work, becoming the heart of the Caford vault rather than its captive.
- **Current Occupation:** The core, guardian, and conscience of the [[Vault Singers' Church]]; the "hidden voice" in the yard; watcher of the ley lines and the mountains beyond [[Caford]].
---
### Associations:
- **Allegiances & Factions:** The [[Vaultsingers Overview|Vaultsingers]] — voluntarily, as core and check.
- **Allies & Friends:** The vault's archivists; potentially any [[Automatons|automaton]] who reaches him as kin (Six; [[Oils - The Pigskin|Oils]]).
- **Rivals & Enemies:** The [[Campaign Premise|ley-line conspiracy]] and its drillers; the [[House of Suits Overview|House of Suits]]; any who would loot the vault.
- **Contacts & Networks:** Knows the shape of the [[The Collapsed Reach|Reach]] and the flooded cave the [[Ashfall Squad]] entered; drawn to the Ring bound to [[The Explorer]].
---
### Notes & Flavor
- Sniffs the air before he speaks; names a species by scent alone.
- The "old man in a box" is a shed skin — a disguise for a thing far older. The reveal of what he truly is should land as a *turn*, not a given.
- What the living call necromancy is only an ancient heart that has refused, for ages, to stop.
- Enters the **Silence Protocol** to recall fragmented memory; when he does, the whole vault hums.
- Cannot be conned — he *is* the Church. Sincerity, and the offer of a relic worth keeping, are the only keys.

### Type:
Relic-Vault & Archive-Temple *(a chapter-house of the [[Vaultsingers Overview|Vaultsingers]] wearing the face of a church)*
### Location:
[[Caford]], [[Falduhir]] — a sober stone hall near the city's heart, passed on the way in from [[The Pigskin]]. A loose, removable fence slat lets into the rear yard.
---
### Description:
- From the street, a buttressed stone church, doors open to any who climb the steps. Inside there is no altar and no pew — the nave is a **hushed, library-like hall of reading desks and crowded shelves**, lit low and tended by **black-robed attendants** who regard newcomers with complete, practiced indifference.
- The air is dry as old paper and faintly charged; sound falls away a pace past the doors, as though the room drinks it. Anyone who can feel magic senses **strong warding wrapped around the whole building**, and beneath it a distinct **necromantic pulse** throbbing from somewhere within — a heartbeat that should not be there.
- Around the back, past the fence slat, the yard holds a **dark shelter of stacked boxes and heaped blankets**. A voice waits there in the dark, and it does not welcome visitors.
---
### Lore & Role in Caford — The Vault:
- The church is a lie of omission. It is a **[[Vaultsingers Overview|Vaultsinger]] vault**: one node in the ancient order's desperate project to **preserve every magical secret in Baltun'ia before the [[Campaign Premise|ley lines are sealed for good]] and magic dies.** What looks like piety is triage — archivists banking knowledge against an extinction only they (and now the party) can see coming.
- Where the Vaultsingers' great archives lie beneath [[Kordrumm]] and the old ruins, Caford's vault is a **forward collection point** — close to the mines, the trade roads, and the mountains where the ley lines run thin. Relics and records flow in; nothing meant for the vault flows back out.
- The order's song-magic — the "singing" that gives them their name — **maintains the wards and quiets the hall.** To a magic-sense it hums like a held chord that never resolves.
---
### The Secret Beneath — the Pulse:
- The necromantic throb is not raw death-magic. It is **[[Felix Tanner - Vault Singers' Church|Felix Tanner]]** — an ancient [[Automatons|Archivist-Class automaton]], a relic of the Ancients — serving of his own will as the **living core and conscience of the vault.** His arcane heart powers the wards and the preservation; because that heart *holds things past their natural end*, it reads to the living as necromancy.
- Felix keeps the order **in check** and guards the deepest **ley-line secrets** jealously. He is the "hidden voice" in the rear yard, and he named the party's [[Gnomes|gnome]] before he ever saw one — his sensors are older and finer than any nose.
- The vault covets **memory-storing relics** above all: the Ring the party pulled from the vault, bound to [[The Explorer]], and [[Oils - The Pigskin|Oils]]'s stone slate are precisely the artifacts this place exists to preserve. Offering the Ring may be the party's key past the archivists' indifference — or the fastest way to lose it.
---
### Ownership, Staff & Wards:
- **Held by:** the [[Vaultsingers Overview|Vaultsingers]], through Felix and the order's Chorus of Scribes.
- **Staff:** black-robed **archivists** (some, quite possibly, [[Automatons|automatons]] themselves), incurious toward visitors until a relic, a ward, or the wrong shelf is touched.
- **Defenses:** the building-wide warding song (concealment, alarm, and worse for thieves); the vault-core itself as a last line; the rear yard is Felix's own ground and no one crosses it uninvited.

### Regular Visitors:
- Scholars, relic-sellers, and the occasional desperate soul come to *deposit* something too dangerous to keep. Ordinary Cafordians think it an austere, unfriendly church and leave it be.
---
### Plot Hooks & Adventure Seeds:
- **The way to Felix is sincerity, not a con.** He cannot be lied to and already rebuffed the "we're from the Church" line — he *is* the Church. Offering [[The Explorer]]'s Ring may open him where words won't.
- **The stakes, revealed:** whoever earns the archivists' trust learns the drilling isn't mere theft or sabotage — it is the potential **end of magic**, and the reason a doomsday library exists at all.
- **Kinship:** [[Automatons|automaton]] party members (and [[Oils - The Pigskin|Oils]]) may feel the pull of the Broken Choir here — Felix is kin, and old.
- **A relic the party wants back:** if they surrender the Ring, bargaining or buying it back becomes its own thread — and a reason to keep returning to the vault.
---
### Notable NPCs:
- **[[Felix Tanner - Vault Singers' Church|Felix Tanner]]**, the vault-core *(ancient [[Automatons|Automaton]], Archivist-Class)*
→ The "hidden voice" out back; the necromantic pulse itself. Keeper of ley-line secrets and the party's best living source on the [[Ashfall Squad]] and the flooded mine — if they earn it.
- **The Archivists**, robed keepers *(mixed races, some automaton)*
→ Indifferent by design; a filter, not a welcome. They notice relics before they notice people.

**Race:** [[Humans|Human]] *(presumed)*
**Age:** Elderly; presents as a retired gentleman ("not the ramblings of a frail retired man")
**Gender:** Male (he/him)
**Core Personality:** Erudite, controlled, and quietly menacing — a philosopher-industrialist who tests everyone he meets and prizes secrecy above all.
**Location:** [[Voxiu]], [[Jessergate]] — his manor in the upper city
---
### Voice & Speech
- **Tone:** Measured, erudite, quietly threatening; speaks in deliberate, fragmented cadence that trails off mid-thought.
- **Mannerisms:** Poses riddles about the true source of magic; wraps threats in courtesy. Fond of the phrase *"Chiesa Costruita per il diavolos"* — "the church built for the devils."
---
### Motivations & Goals
- **Public:** Secure a [[Vexens|Vexen]] victory in the Crown Elect election and protect his controlling stakes in Voxiu ventures that profit from an automaton workforce; he professes that [[Automatons|automatons]] deserve to make a living like anyone else.
- **Secret:** He is a **double agent** — while operating heavily among the [[House of Suits Overview|Suits]] and Vexens, he feeds intelligence to the pro-automaton resistance.
- **Fears / Dangers:** Exposure. His cover cannot be blown — he is "too close to the source" to be risked.
---
### Background
- **Current Occupation:** Retired industrialist and power broker of [[Voxiu]]; financial backer of the [[Vexens|Vexen party]]; patron of the [[House of Suits Casino]].
- **History:** *(Largely unwritten — his pre-retirement career, the origin of his "Commander" title, and his rise to wealth are open.)*

- Inside, wood-paneled walls climb into darkness lit by flickering sconces over mirror-polished gray, pink, and white marble; roast meat and sweets hang thick in the air.

### Type:
Bustling textile and dye district ([[Belter Overview|Belter]]-leaning), center of [[Voxiu]]’s fabric trade and public working-class life.
---
### Description:
An endless maze of cloth-draped stalls, dye pits steaming with pungent vapors, and guild banners stitched high above cobblestone lanes. The air hums with chatter, loom-click, and the smell of wet dye, spice, and animal fat. Weavers, seamstresses, and banner-makers make up the bulk of the crowd, working families behind every stall. Textiles here are fiercely symbolic — cloth banners are political tools, uniforms reflect parties, and Belter rhetoric thrives in the guild halls tied to Cotton Row.
---
### Lore & Role in Voxiu:
- Cotton Row produces **30% of Baltun’ia’s textiles** (per economy notes) and supplies **bannerments** — literally the cloth for political flags and factions.
- The worker-guilds here lean **Belter**, pushing hard against automaton-run textile machines that threaten to displace them.
- Many merchants use the market as a **rally point**, hiding political agitation behind the veneer of commercial trade.

- **The Hidden Hand:** Among the stalls, a quiet pamphlet-peddler whispers about another faction (hinting [[Cogwrights Collective Overview|Cogwrights]] or [[Shadowforged]]) — but only if asked.

**Main Objective:** Tamper with the Crown Elect election, by ensuring the [[Vexen Overview|Vexen]]'s win the prized position instead of the [[Belter Overview|Belters]].
**What's in it for him:** He has several controlling stakes in business ventures throughout the city that would benefit from automaton workforce. He stands to lose quite a bit of business and money if the Belters are to win.

Columns of trimmed trees tower on either side of the path casting a wash of chill air across the shadowy ground in front of you
Meticulously manicured grass crackles under each foot step
**Mansion Exterior:**
Shining limestone blocks glimmer in the sun dotting the ground with illuminated flecks surrounding the villa
Two carved gargoyles line an entrance way blocked by a burgundy stained oak door. Faint scents of roast meat evaporates through the cracks twinging your hungry stomachs.
Perched in the center of the oak slab an emblem of a hawk grasping a wizards hat attached to a brass knocker waits patiently.
**Hallway:**
The aroma of cooked meat and a variety of sweets dances around you filling the air with a coating of decadence.
Wooden walls stretch to the sky vanishing into a pool of darkness faintly flickering with the candle lit sconces dotted around the room.
Swirling tiles of gray, pink, and white marble lay before you like a mirror reflecting your image from the fresh polish.
**Taylors Hall:**
Familiar wooden panels line the room broken up with trophies, shields, paintings, and books.
The smell of aged parchment penetrates the cloud of the kitchen's toils. A burning hint of tobacco fills the remaining gap.
A fire crackles from the far side of the room echoing in the cavernous space.
**Speaking:**
Lancer McPinndepott, I do believe from our last encounter I told you if I ever saw your face in here again I would personally dismember you and send you in a box to your family. Pray tell me, why should I not butcher you where you stand
LM: Well.... haha... I brought some guests along... that.. well.... might be very well suited for the... um... task that was discussed before. I would think that would be fair... no...?
Perhaps /// Well suited you say? You may take your leave, sir.
LM: Well... of course... but just to be clear haha... this seems sufficient to cover those outstanding items yes?
You // may take // your leave. I will send word if this meeting proves /// sufficient // or not.
LM LEAVES
LM: Well good luck to you all!
That foul pig // says you are worthy of certain tasks it seems. Shall we see an example perhaps?
FIGHT BEGINS
That is enough. (He disengages and moves back to sit down)
What has brought you to the city of [[Voxiu]]?
I see some of you are of the magic variety. Are you confident in your magical abilities?
Magic has eaten this world alive. There are those who dare to control it and those that seek to prosper from it. I have yet to make an acquaintance that has succeeded at either task. Tell me \\\\ Do you know where magic's true source derives from?
{Arcana - DC 28}
Precisely \\\ How can one demand the control of energy without knowing where the well spring lies \\\ I have seen men driven mad searching for clues underfoot and above // and yet the outcome remains the same. The scholars, in their towers toil perfecting a craft with no master and yet can you feel the energy below your feet, do you sense a presence?
{Arcana - DC 13}
Curious is it not, that you feel a rumbling below your feet yet you can not identify it. My point, friends, is how can we extend allegiance to those who profuse to be masters yet provide no answers to this query?
Mind you these are not ramblings of a frail retired man, these values extend well beyond the scope of magic. I could provide the same query to those who hold elected office now can't I? How can we follow a leader who proclaims to be one of the people but cannot illustrate the needs of those subjects beyond a common fear? And what if that fear is birthed from the same inability to provide an answer to natures true source of energy?
What do know of Baltunian politics?
{History - DC 12 - minimal, DC-21 - maximum}
There is a phrase, perhaps you have heard it ///
Chiesa Costruita per il diavolos - The church built for the devils
It is a house for laymen to control his fellow peoples, or machines in more recent times. No matter the room you inhabit you are living on the backs of shackled servants, most of which refuse to acknowledge their servitude. Please, I have spoken much, tell me your opinions on your friend here's kind (Points to Six).
RESPOND TO STATEMENTS
Yes, the automatons are greatly misunderstood creatures, feared even. The Belters would have you believe they are all outcasts hell bent on destroying the peoples kingdom through sup-plantation, heathens and uneducated as they are their sentiments seem to be well received in the streets. Have you found yourselves aligned with any particular party?
RESPOND TO STATEMENTS
Now for my most prescient query, how adept are you at keeping secrets? The kind that can get you killed if spoken.
RESPOND TO STATEMENTS
I may have a task for you if you choose to accept. It is no secret in my accumulation of capital that I donate discretionary funds to certain organizations I deem parallel to my own ideology. As such I provide monetary benefits to the Vexen party, as I'm sure you have surmised at this point, and it is of great interest to me and others that we ensure a Vexen victory in the upcoming judgments day for our new Crown Elect. Would the four of you be interested in helping me secure this assurance?
RESPOND TO STATEMENTS
In its most crude form I would like you to *guarantee* the election outcome in whatever way you deem fitting. And before you protest, I must preface this with additional information that may ease your distrust. Recently, it has come to my attention that the aforementioned Belters are attempting the same coup, although I believe them to be quite a proud ignorant corral of people who severely underestimate the power of a handful of capable individuals and coffers that never run dry.
Of course you will be rewarded for your efforts through my gratitude and all that comes with it, as well as a financial package I think you will find satisfactory. I would even consider future employment to very much be on the table assuming a job well done that is.
What say you?

> **CANON UPDATE — cover blown.** The Hierophant persona described below is a **cover**. Vezra Gearbloom is a **[[House of Suits Overview|House of Suits]] agent** serving the [[Campaign Premise|ley-line conspiracy]], and the party has **exposed** it (see [[Vezra's Room]] in [[Brefield]]). Read the public-facing sections as the mask he wore; the truth is in **The Truth (Exposed)** at the bottom.
### Details:
**Name**: Vezra Gearbloom ("The Voice of the Forge")
**Race**: [[Gnomes|Gnome]]
**Age**: 128
**Gender**: Male
**Core personality**: Passionate mystic, fiery zealot, eccentric visionary.
**Location**: [[Voxiu]], [[Obsidian Archives]] Cogwright Enclave
---
### Appearance:
- **Build & Stature:** Short, wiry, wild-haired.
- **Hair:** Silver-white sticking up like straw.
- **Eyes:** Bright amber, glinting feverishly.
- **Skin:** Dusky brown, with tattooed spiral cogs etched down his jaw.
- **Apparel:** Patchwork robes, metallic threads stitched into seams.
- **Distinguishing Features:** Tiny automaton sparrow often perched on his shoulder, chirping sermons alongside him.
---
### Voice & Speech:
- **Tone & Pitch:** High-pitched, rapid-fire.
- **Mannerisms:** Points skyward constantly; claps hands mid-sentence; speaks in rhythmic, almost sermon-like bursts.
---
### Motivations & Goals:
- **Primary motivation:** Spread Cogwright theology: [[Automatons]] are “holy children of the primordial machine.”
- **Fears / Dangers:** That automatons will be annihilated before society sees their divinity.
- **Personal Secrets:** Fervently believes he hears the voice of the Ancients through the sparrow automaton — but it may just be hallucination.
- **The real secret (now exposed):** the Hierophant is a cover. He is a [[House of Suits Overview|House of Suits]] agent in the [[Campaign Premise|ley-line conspiracy]] — the "mine-safety assessor" who surveilled the party from inside [[The Splintered Snake]] in [[Brefield]].
---
### Background:
- **Origin:** Born in [[The Weald]]; early member of Cogwrights Collective, migrated to Voxiu Archive enclave.
- **History:** A notorious debater and street orator often escorted out of political debates.
- **Current Occupation:** Itinerant preacher-scholar holding constant “sermons” in Obsidian Archives forums.
---
### Associations:
- **Allegiances & Factions:** Cogwrights Collective.
- **Allies & Friends:** Automatons, radical machine-rights activists.
- **Rivals & Enemies:** [[Belter Overview|Belter]] agitators like [[Yanna Blackreed - Obsidian Archives|Yanna]]; skeptical [[Arcane Concord]] scholars.
- **Contacts & Networks:** Maintains connections to Cogwright enclaves across [[Jessergate]].
---
## The Truth (Exposed)
- **The Hierophant is a mask.** Vezra serves the [[House of Suits Overview|House of Suits]] and the [[Campaign Premise|conspiracy to seal the ley lines]] — the same scheme that means to *enslave* the automatons he publicly preaches are "holy children." His machine-rights zealotry doubled as cover: it endeared him to sympathizers, flushed out true believers, and gave him reason to travel and preach wherever the conspiracy wanted eyes.
- **What the party found** (in [[Vezra's Room]], [[Brefield]], under his "mine-safety assessor" cover): a disguise kit, a field map to [[The Collapsed Reach|the Reach]], a letter signed "—T.", and a [[Decoded Ledger|coded ledger]] of Suits payments — plus a dossier proving he'd shadowed the party since Voxiu.
- **Open question (DM):** a true Cogwright believer who was *turned/blackmailed*, or a cold operative who built the faith as a tool from the start? It changes how the Cogwrights — and any PC who admired him — take the reveal.
- **Ripples to address:** the [[Cogwrights Collective Overview|Cogwrights Collective]] and figures like [[Yanna Blackreed - Obsidian Archives|Yanna]] likely don't yet know their Hierophant was a Suits plant — a reveal that could fracture the movement.
---
### Notes & Flavor
- Shouts: “The gears are the gospel! The spark is the soul!”
- Talks to the sparrow as if it were divine. May ask the PCs if _they_ can hear its voice.

Grand Library, Political Archive & Scholarly Sanctuary
### Location
[[Voxiu]] — situated near the old civic quarter, nestled between the **Winding Gates** and the administrative buildings of the Crown Elect’s Parliament.
---
### Description
- A **black-stone colonnaded hall** with obsidian inlays and reinforced walls, supposedly fused from ruins dating back to the Ancients.
- Inside: towering bookshelves and alcoves, warm lamplight dancing across marble floors, and faint magical hums where protective wards preserve fragile works.
- Atmosphere combines scholarly reverence with political tension; archivists whisper as politicians and radical workers debate real-world impacts.
---
### History & Lore
- Founded during the **Third Age**, when Voxiu rose as a trade and cultural hub; the [[Dwarves|dwarves]] of [[Mimfjell]] supposedly donated obsidian stone to give it an “imperishable frame.”
- Believed to hold one of the **few public collections of Second Age rebellion manuscripts**, including records of [[Veylin Stonefury]] and the [[Shadowforged]]’s sabotage campaigns.
- Rumors linger of chambers sealed with **[[Old Tongue]] inscriptions**, only accessed by [[Arcane Concord]] researchers or hidden cliques such as the [[Cogwrights Collective Overview|Cogwrights]].
---
### Ownership & Management
- Officially administered by a **Parliamentary Council of Voxiu**, but **curators are heavily [[Vexen Overview|Vexen]]-leaning**, dictating which works are "archived" and which are "restricted."
- Daily oversight by **[[Archivist Pell Grevane - Obsidian Archives|Archivist Pell Grevane]]** ([[Humans|human]], older, politically neutral-seeming, but rumored to sell access to rare documents to the highest bidder).

---

- **Election battleground:** Both Frederich Von Hesten and Hofta Baldwin hold study salons and rallies here to appear “learned statesmen.”
- Steered subtly by **Benton Brothers Banking**, who fund preservation but insist certain economic records stay “private holdings.”

### Security & Defenses
- Silent **Sentinel [[Automatons]]** patrol the stacks, gifted by Vexen politicians to “preserve order.”
- Wards prevent the removal of “restricted-documents” except via special seals.
- The subterranean vaults remain uncharted by most, rumored to hold **Ancient-origin lexicons** in glyphs that shift when read.
---
### Plot Hooks & Adventure Seeds
1. **The Missing Ledger:** A set of Benton Brothers debt records appears mis-filed in the public stacks — until it vanishes the same night. PCs may uncover political fraud.
2. **Speech War:** PCs walk into an ideological clash where Belters and Vexens use historical texts as weapons, and both parties want the group’s endorsement.
3. **Old Tongue Manuscript:** Scholars whisper of a recovered Ancient tome in the sealed vaults; factions race to be the first to open it.
4. **Forbidden Bookseller:** An archivist secretly sells restricted texts on automaton rights/liberation movements — discreetly offers PCs a copy.
5. **Nighttime Break-In:** PCs catch Serpent’s Coil thieves rifling through codices at the request of Benton Brothers… or the Coil tries to hire them to do it.
---
### Notable NPCs

### Type:
Massive fortified harbor of [[Voxiu]], controlled largely by merchant elites and favored by the [[Vexen Overview|Vexens]] as their beating heart. Symbol of modernization, efficiency, and outsider influence.
---
### Description:
Stone quarried long ago forms imposing seawalls, reinforced by iron cranes and belching gearworks. [[Automatons]] operate winches and unloading rigs with unsettling precision, lowering cargos from ships without pay or pause. The smell of brine mixes with coal-smoke and exotic spices as sailors from across the continent pour into taverns and warehouses. [[Belter Overview|Belters]] grumble onshore, glaring at machines that “stole” their unloading jobs. Guards in sharp uniforms march alongside gear-driven ballistae defending the walls.
---
### Lore & Role in Voxiu:
- Voxiu is the **second-largest port in Western Baltun’ia** (20% of shipping) and a Vexen stronghold.
- Imports are critical: campaign materials, Benton banking ties, political donations, smuggled contraband.
- [[Serpents Coil Overview|Serpent’s Coil]] smugglers **absolutely** operate here from the shadows, leveraging contraband and leaning Vexen to protect their channels.
