Raw Blame History

Type:

Philosophical & Mystic Circle (with elements of Crafting Guild / Innovation Syndicate)

Core Focus:

The Cogswright Collective are a mystic order of machinists and inventors who see technology not merely as utility but as a sacred manifestation of the cosmos. To them, Automatons and crafted devices are “Children of the Divine Gear,” proof that life, will, and spirit can transcend flesh.
Invention is practiced as ritual theurgy, a way to commune with Khyteus, the minor deity of fire and forges, and with the lingering machine-mysteries of the Ancients.

Regions & Cities of Influence:

  • The Weald – Nargathel: Site of their sacred foundry-temple, blending natural ley energies with living machines.
  • Jessergate – Voxiu: A debating enclave attached to the Obsidian Archives, where sermons over automaton rights blur into political disputes.
  • Verdant Isle – Hilonde: Workshops producing hybrid biomechanical creatures, treated as “sacred emissaries.”
  • Dragabri – Ironswill: Splinter sects often clash against industrial forges, condemning them as profane defilement of divine craft.

Structure & Membership:

  • The Gearwright Hierophants – Priest-engineers and mystic leaders guiding both spiritual doctrine and technological creation.
  • The Choir of Turning Cogs – Monastic chanters who speak and pray in Mechanik, synchronizing their chants with ritualized machines.
  • Laywrights – Common members, artisans, and evangelists. They travel preaching a blend of philosophy, mysticism, and invention.
  • Awakened Automatons – Many seek sanctuary here, revered as prophets bearing fractured fragments of Ancient truth.

Membership is fluid, drawing Gnomes, Humans, Elves, and automatons alike, united by reverence for invention as a sacred act.

Philosophy and Goals:

  • The Gear is Divine: All of existence is a great machine; every turn, wheel, and rhythm points toward cosmic order.
  • Automatons are Children: Sentient constructs must be protected and uplifted as a divine mandate.
  • Invention as Prayer: Every crafted device is built as a psalm, etched with runic scripture.
  • The Great Re-Alignment: A prophecy holds that the Leylines themselves are gears fallen out of joint. The Collective strives to restore them, bringing about an Age of Harmony between flesh, spirit, and machine.

Political, Social, and Economic Influence:

  • Political: Vocal in Voxiu’s elections, often rallying crowds around automaton liberation and machine-theology debates.
  • Social: Seen alternately as visionaries, lunatics, or heretics. They inspire fascination among philosophers but distrust from industrialists and traditional clergy.
  • Economic: Artifacts produced by their sects are unique, often impractical, but treated as relics. Wealthy nobles, mystics, and collectors will pay high prices for them.

Culture and Customs:

  • The Turning: Daily rituals where members meditate in circular halls, physically rotating great cog-altars to align prayer with cosmic rhythm.
  • Spark-Test Rituals: Automatons or inventions are blessed in lightning, seen as invoking the divine spark of life.
  • Runic Psalms: All devices are inscribed with spiraling glyphic scripture in Gnomish or Mechanik, believed to empower them with holiness.
  • Sacred Relics: Ancient automaton cores are preserved as relics, believed to hum with the remnants of divine thought. Pilgrims travel to commune with them.

Potential Plot Hooks & Conflicts:

  • A radical splinter sect calls for automaton supremacy over organics, splitting the Collective.
  • Serpents Coil Overview smugglers steal a Relic Core the Cogswrights consider holy, sparking a crisis.
  • The prophecy of the “Gearfall” foretells catastrophic leyline collapse unless grand restoration rituals succeed.
  • Rival factions like the Arcane Concord clash with the Collective, decrying their “machine mysticism” as irrational and dangerous.
  • A prophetic automaton claims to receive visions directly from the Leylines themselves, drawing both reverence and fear.

Notable NPCs:

  • Hierophant Hierophant Vezra Gearbloom - Obsidian Archives, “The Voice of the Forge” (Gnome): Leader of the Collective. Wears robes of wire and silk. Preaches that the gods themselves are machines in disguise.
  • Saint-Cog Vox (Automaton): Revered prophet said to hear the Leylines’ heartbeat directly, scribing glowing runes mid-air during trances.
  • Molrik Ashweld (Dwarves Exile): Radical preacher; left Dragabri’s industrial forges to condemn them as soulless machines. Known for inflammatory sermons.
  • Sister Liora Khyteblade (Human Mystic): Knight-mystic wielding biomechanical wings created in ritual communion. Both warrior and living manifestation of the Collective’s prophecy.
