The Revolt of the Free Peoples (3100 - 3199 S.A.)
The Revolt of the Free Peoples was a century-long struggle against dwarven dominion, culminating in the collapse of the Dwarven Empire and the liberation of Baltun’ia. Though the revolt began as isolated uprisings, it grew into a coordinated resistance effort, uniting the oppressed peoples of the continent in a desperate fight for freedom.
This conflict saw brutal battles, acts of sabotage, and political maneuvering, forcing the Dwarves into a war on multiple fronts that they could not sustain. By 3199 S.A., the siege of Kordrumm ended the empire’s reign, bringing an era of dwarven rule to an end.
Causes of the Revolt
Though the dwarven empire had ruled for centuries, by 3100 S.A., tensions had reached a breaking point.
Key Factors That Led to Rebellion:
- The Crushing of Non-Dwarven Trade (2900 - 3100 S.A.) – The Golden Vaults enforced harsh taxation, crippling Halflings and Gnomes commerce. This economic stranglehold pushed many into poverty and dissent.
- The Exile of the Elven Mystics (2835 S.A.) – The mass banishment of elven spellcasters, who were seen as a threat to dwarven authority, created a hidden network of arcane resistance.
- Increased Militarization (3000 - 3100 S.A.) – The Automatons Legions expanded, replacing living soldiers with unfeeling, unwavering constructs that enforced laws with ruthless efficiency.
- The Deep Roads Crackdown (2970 S.A.) – The dwarves restricted travel and closed underground highways, preventing trade and movement between non-dwarven settlements.
- Cultural Suppression – Dwarven rulers attempted to erase native traditions, enforcing dwarven customs and languages while outlawing other forms of governance.
By 3100 S.A., anger and desperation boiled over into full-scale revolt.
Phases of the Revolt
Phase 1: The Early Uprisings (3100 - 3120 S.A.)
The first revolts began as small, disorganized rebellions, but quickly spread across the continent.
- The Uprising of Stoffen (3105 S.A.) – Halflings and gnomes seized control of a major trade city, cutting off dwarven tax shipments.
- The Feykin Revolt of the Verdant Isle (3072 - 3110 S.A.) – Druids and wild magic users drove dwarves from their territories, turning the land itself against them.
- Sabotage of Drath Karzul (3115 S.A.) – Rebel infiltrators destroyed key forges in the volcanic city, halting the production of dwarven war machines.
By 3120 S.A., the dwarves realized that the rebellions were not isolated—they were the beginning of a full-scale war.
Phase 2: The War Spreads (3120 - 3160 S.A.)
The revolt evolved into an organized resistance movement, as key leaders emerged and factions united.
Key Events:
- The Silent Assemblies (c. 3125 S.A.) – Secret meetings between Elves, halflings, gnomes, and rebel dwarves laid the foundation for coordinated strikes.
- The Battle of the Weald (3120 S.A.) – Elven forces, guided by Elessara Moonveil, ambushed and destroyed a dwarven supply convoy, marking the first major victory for the rebellion.
- Formation of the Free Peoples’ Army (3150 S.A.) – The first true military alliance of all rebel factions, united under a single cause.
- Collapse of the Deep Roads (3150 S.A.) – Led by Veylin Stonefury, the rebels demolished key tunnel systems, isolating dwarven strongholds and crippling the empire’s mobility.
- The War of the Burning Plains (3155 - 3160 S.A.) – A series of open-field battles, where dwarven legions of automatons clashed against rebel guerilla fighters and magic-wielders. The rebels used dwarven technology against them, seizing and reprogramming war machines.
By 3160 S.A., the rebellion had eroded dwarven control and forced them into defensive warfare.
Phase 3: The Final Campaign (3160 - 3199 S.A.)
The rebels launched a final, coordinated push to topple dwarven rule entirely.
Key Events:
- The Siege of The Bastion of Ord Karag (3187 S.A.) – A months-long siege that ended when rebel mages summoned an unnatural storm, collapsing the city’s defenses.
- The Battle of the Silent Fields (3158 S.A.) – The largest single clash of the war, where an entire dwarven automaton legion was destroyed in a masterful ambush.
- The Smuggling of Kaelor Blackbrook’s Treasure (3190 S.A.) – Rebel merchants successfully redirected stolen dwarven wealth, funding final war efforts.
- The Siege of Kordrumm (3199 S.A.) – The final battle of the war, where an allied force besieged the dwarven capital for months. The High Thane surrendered, marking the end of dwarven rule.
The Aftermath and Legacy
With the dwarven empire dismantled, the Conference of Peace (3200 S.A.) was held to determine the future of Baltun’ia.
Key Outcomes of the Conference:
- Dissolution of the Dwarven Empire – Dwarves were stripped of imperial control, though their cities remained intact.
- Division of Land and Power – New independent city-states and territories emerged, each governed separately.
- The Ban on Forced Labor – While not fully enforceable, slavery and serfdom were formally outlawed.
However, not all wounds healed. Resentment toward dwarves lingered, and some factions still nursed old grudges.
The Revolt’s Lasting Impact
- Rise of Free City-States – The new political order moved away from racial kingdoms, setting the stage for a more diverse, integrated society.
- Shift in Military Tactics – The war transformed warfare, making guerilla tactics, sabotage, and magic-enhanced combat the new norm.
- Technological and Arcane Advancements – The conflict pushed the boundaries of rune-magic, war machines, and ley-line warfare, shaping future conflicts.
- Lingering Tensions – While the war ended, some dwarves refused to acknowledge their empire’s fall, and minor conflicts and border disputes continued for decades.
