# Session Prep — Brefield: Vezra's Room
*Prep date: 6-22-26 · Party location: [[Brefield]], [[Falduhir]] — inside [[The Splintered Snake]], about to search [[Vezra's Room]].*
---
## Where We Left Off
Session 6 ([[6. Taylor's Manor - 9-22-25|Taylor's Manor]]) ended in [[Voxiu]]: the party survived an ambush at [[Commander Taylor]]'s manor, then heard his pitch — **rig the Crown Elect election** so the [[Vexen|Vexens]] beat the [[Belter Overview|Belters]]. Since then they've traveled north into [[Falduhir]] to the mining town of [[Brefield]], where the [[House of Suits Overview|House of Suits]] agent who'd been tailing them since Voxiu — **[[Hierophant Vezra Gearbloom - Obsidian Archives|Vezra]]** — let a room in their own inn, **two doors down the hall**, then vanished after being made. The party has **exposed** that this "mine-safety assessor" is the same man as Voxiu's beloved Cogwright Hierophant. They're about to toss the room he was ordered to burn and didn't.
---
## Likely Scenes / Locations
- **[[Vezra's Room]]** — *the cold, abandoned room of a professional who left in a hurry.* Door unlatched, bed made, wine skinned over, coat on the hook, travel case at the foot of the bed. The clue-delivery scene; see tiers + trap below.
- **The Mine-Warden's Office** ([[Magistrate Corvin Hale - Brefield|Magistrate Corvin Hale]]) — *a velvet-coated bureaucrat sweating behind a condemnation seal and a decanter.* The room's evidence points straight here; the session's likely centerpiece.
- **The Ore-Scales** ([[Hobb Tallow - Brefield|Hobb Tallow]], scale-master) — the weighing station that's been logging the Suits' equipment caravans manifest-free. The second money-thread.
- **[[The Collapsed Reach]] / Shaft III** — the dig site every clue converges on. *Not* this session — the horizon you're pointing them at.
---
## NPCs in Play
- **[[Hierophant Vezra Gearbloom - Obsidian Archives|Vezra Gearbloom]]** *(Gnome — absent, but everywhere in this room).* The "assessor" cover and the Voxiu machine-rights preacher are one man, both masks over a Suits agent. His dossier holds a **sketch of one PC** and a margin note flagging someone *"a problem / possibly useful."* **Dread beat:** he watched from down the hall, not across the city.
- **[[Magistrate Corvin Hale - Brefield|Magistrate Corvin Hale]]** *(Human, 54 — Mine-Warden).* Soft hands, pomaded gray hair, overdressed, decanter at his elbow.
- **Voice:** officious and too-loud when bluffing; drops to a dry rasp once frightened.
- **The tell:** keeps glancing at door and window — *not* watching the party, watching for the Suits.
- **Wants:** to survive and keep telling himself he "only condemned a shaft."
- **Secret:** falsified the Shaft III survey, took three Suits payments (third unpaid), greased the scale-master.
- **How he breaks:** *fear/protection = fastest* (the phrase **"other tailors"** lands hardest) · evidence = folds fast · intimidation works but he may bolt · bribery = slowest (he already has Suits money).
- **The Suits watcher** *(unnamed, in town).* Already on Hale. Pressuring Hale **loudly / twice / in public** risks the watcher triggering the kill **early**. Reward quiet-and-quick.
- **[[Hobb Tallow - Brefield|Hobb Tallow]]** *(scale-master — working name).* Bribed via Hale to wave the Suits' night caravans through. Hale can name him; tracing the caravans leads up the mountain.
- **[[Wren Maddox - Brefield|Wren Maddox]]** *(Suits courier — working name).* The human end of the "tithe to the Reach"; a face the party may already have passed. **⚠ May be the same person as [[Brefield|Agent Hilvar Dench]]** (Benton auditor, "unseen investors" via sending stones) — decide whether to merge.
---
## The Room — Clue Tiers & Trap
**3-clue rule — a missed check still points the same way.**
| Access | Find | Gives |
|---|---|---|
| No check | Coat → disguise kit, spirit-gum, forged assessor papers | Planted pro; **ledger cipher key**; spiral-cog token + brass sparrow feather → **the assessor is Vezra Gearbloom** |
| Investigation **DC 12** | Travel case false bottom → **field map** | Range w/ Suits sigil; **site III circled red, "the Reach"** (map always survives) |
| Invest./Perc. **DC 15** (auto if desk pried) | Desk panel → **letter + coded ledger** | Cipher cracks on Arcana/Invest. **DC 13**, instant if disguise kit found |
**The igniter (trap):** desk panel is rigged. **Thieves' Tools DC 15** to disarm. Fail → alchemical bead sparks, letter + ledger ignite; **Dex save DC 13** to snatch **one** of the two (the other burns). Map is safe regardless. Clean disarm → keep all three.
**Takeaways to plant:** the reveal (Gearbloom = Suits) · destination = *the Reach / site III* · clock = *before the season turns* · money-trail = *Hale → the Reach* · mystery = *"the lines being sealed."*
**Handouts ready:** the letter (signed "—T.") and the [[Decoded Ledger]] are written up for the table.
---
## Factions & Agendas
- **[[House of Suits Overview|House of Suits]]** — the live hand. Owns Hale, routes money "up to the Reach," and is prepared to erase Hale ("the tailors mend it"). Front: the Velvet Wheel Casino in Voxiu; killing is "an unlucky draw."
- **Benton Brothers Mining Co.** *(Vexen-aligned)* — own Brefield's shafts, bankroll the Suits; the corporate body the dig hides inside.
- **Pick-Belters Union** *(local, Belter-aligned)* — would gut Hale if his fraud surfaced. A lever and a potential ally.
- **The conspiracy** (see [[Campaign Premise]]) — drilling to **seal the ley lines** and choke magic. The letter's *"third line nearly sealed… two more and the Reach goes quiet"* is the party's first concrete look at the endgame.
---
## Open Hooks & Threats
- **Race for Hale.** Reach him first → living witness, the scale-master thread, "the Reach" / "lines going quiet" from a second mouth. Suits first → cooling body staged as a mine accident; leave one salvageable clue (hidden ledger page or courier name) so the thread survives.
- **The watcher** punishing a loud smash-and-grab.
- **The personal dossier** — one PC is watched and rated. Paranoia fuel.
- **The thaw clock** — "before the season turns" / "the Shifting." Two ley-lines left to seal.
---
## Open Decisions (DM)
- **Merge Wren Maddox with Agent Hilvar Dench?** Strong overlap — one in-town Suits money-contact is cleaner than two.
- **Gearbloom:** a true Cogwright believer who was *turned/blackmailed*, or a cold operative who built the faith as a tool from the start? Changes how the Cogwrights — and any PC who admired him — take the reveal.
- **The Collapsed Reach interior** — what's actually down there (the drilling rig, who runs it, the "old engines" / ancient automaton drill cores, the fate of the vanished miners). Stubbed; build before they climb.
---
## Loose Threads / Housekeeping
- **No Session 7 recap yet.** The journey north + exposing Vezra happened in play but isn't logged (recaps stop at #6). Worth backfilling.
- **[[z_other/Campaign Flow|Campaign Flow]]** still ends at Taylor's Manor with placeholder "hold" nodes — hasn't been extended into the Brefield arc.

# Session Prep — Caford: The Vault Singers' Church & Felix Tanner
*Prep date: 7-9-26 · Party location: [[Caford]], [[Falduhir]] — inside the front hall of the [[Vault Singers' Church]], having just retreated from the warning voice in the rear yard.*
---
## Where We Left Off
Session 8 ([[8. Oils - 6-29-26|Oils]]) at [[The Pigskin]]: the automaton [[Oils - The Pigskin|Oils]] handed the party the truth. The [[Ashfall Squad]] entered the mountains through a cave mouth connected to the mines, and that shaft was reported **flooded the very next day** — so Janos's vanished companions may be sealed *inside*. Oils named **[[Felix Tanner - Vault Singers' Church|Felix Tanner]]** as the man who knows more (and begged not to be named as the source), placed **"the Reach"** as a Suits *objective* rather than a place, and confirmed a man matching **[[Commander Taylor's Proposition|Commander Taylor]]** sat at a map-carving meeting overseen by the **Spade**. Janos read Felix's location from Oils's mind — behind the [[Vault Singers' Church]] — but a hidden voice out back threatened them, smelled the [[Gnomes|gnome]] among them, and drove them off. They then came in the front doors: a hushed, library-like hall of desks and shelves tended by indifferent black-robed attendants, wrapped in strong warding magic with a **necromantic pulse** beneath it.
---
## Three Reveals Now in Canon
1. **Felix Tanner is an ancient automaton.** The "haggard old man in a nest of boxes" is how he sat in Oils's *memory* — not what he is. Felix is an ancient **[[Automatons|Archivist-Class automaton]]**, the **living power source and conscience of the vault**, there of his own free will. The "necromantic pulse" Six felt is Felix — an ancient core sustaining preserved magic, reading as necromancy because it *holds things past their natural end*. His "sniff" is a sensor array finer than any nose.
2. **The Church is a doomsday archive.** It *is* the [[Vaultsingers Overview|Vaultsingers]]' Caford vault, racing to **store every magical secret before the [[Campaign Premise|ley lines are fully sealed]] and magic dies.** Not an enemy — the campaign's **counter-conspiracy**. The wards are their song-magic; the archivists are banking knowledge against an extinction only they (and now the party) can see.
3. **Taylor is a double agent.** He plays his role in the dark circle (the map meetings, the Spade's table) but is **secretly steering the party toward the truth** — the mine map, the "proposition," the introductions were all breadcrumbs. He **cannot break cover** and will read cold, even villainous, if confronted. *DM irony: the party is on track to file him as an enemy exactly when he's their most valuable hidden asset — keep their suspicion alive.*
---
## Likely Scenes / Locations
- **[[Vault Singers' Church]]** *(Caford)* — *a temple that is really a library; reverent hush, robed archivists who won't meet your eye, and something dead humming under the wards.* The session's center. Front archive-hall + warded rear yard.
- **Felix's rear yard** *(behind the Church)* — *a crude nest of crates and blankets behind a loose fence slat.* Where the "hidden voice" waits. The way in is **sincerity + the Ring**, not a con — he *is* the Church and already rebuffed the "we're from the Church" line.
- **The cave / flooded mine** *(back toward [[Brefield]], the Ironreach Range)* — the entrance the Ashfall used, marked on the party's map; leads to [[The Collapsed Reach]] / Shaft III. The "flooding" is the falsified-condemnation cover in the [[Decoded Ledger]]. The next *expedition* beat.
- **[[The Pigskin]]** *(automaton tavern)* — safe harbor and re-hire point; [[Oils - The Pigskin|Oils]] lodges here under [[Karen - The Pigskin|Karen]]'s protection.
---
## NPCs in Play
- **[[Felix Tanner - Vault Singers' Church|Felix Tanner]]** *(ancient [[Automatons|Automaton]], Archivist-Class — the vault-core).*
- **Voice:** low, unhurried, mechanically precise; from the dark it's a warning-growl. Sniffs/scans before he trusts. Speaks of the ley lines like weather.
- **Wants:** preserve every magical secret before the lines close; keep the Vaultsingers honest; guard ley-line truths.
- **Gives, if earned:** what he knows of the [[Ashfall Squad]] and the flooded cave — guardedly, only to those who prove they aren't the circle drilling the mountains. Offering [[The Explorer]]'s Ring is the key.
- **The Archivists** *(robed keepers, some automaton).* Indifferent by design; a filter, not a welcome. They notice relics before they notice people.
- **[[Karen - The Pigskin|Karen]]** *(Automaton — host & fixer of [[The Pigskin]]).* Neutral haven-keeper and favor-broker; can quietly *find* a person or answer in Caford. Off-screen ally, standing contact.
- **[[Oils - The Pigskin|Oils]]** *(small Automaton — investigator/appraiser).* Loyal, re-hireable; reads relics and memories with his stone slate. **Do not expose him** as the source of the Felix tip (Odatina's hard line).
- **[[Commander Taylor's Proposition|Commander Taylor]] / "the Spade"** *(off-stage, looming double agent).* Steering the party in secret; must keep cover. Let him act the part when watched.
---
## Factions & Agendas
- **[[Vaultsingers Overview|The Vaultsingers]]** — relic-keepers running the vault as a hedge against the end of magic. Potential **major ally**. They covet memory-storing relics: the Explorer's Ring and Oils's stone slate are exactly what they exist to preserve. Revealing the Ring is the party's key in — and a risk (they may want to *keep* it).
- **[[House of Suits Overview|House of Suits]]** — the live hand of the conspiracy; the Spade oversees the land/ley-site division; money flows "up to the Reach."
- **Caford's automaton community** ([[Karen - The Pigskin|Karen]], [[Oils - The Pigskin|Oils]], [[The Pigskin]]) — a quiet support network under the shadow of the [[Automatons|Reclamation Sites]]; a local face of the automaton-rights throughline.
- **The conspiracy** ([[Campaign Premise]]) — drilling to fracture and choke the ley lines, revive Rangrim's imperial ideology, and re-enslave the automatons. The flooded mine, the Reach, and this vault's very existence are fingers of the same hand.
---
## Open Hooks & Threats
- **Cracking Felix without a con.** He can't be lied to and clocked the gnome. Sincerity + the Ring opens him; deception or force does not.
- **The stakes escalate from crime to apocalypse.** Earning the archivists' trust reveals the drilling isn't theft — it's the potential **end of magic**, with the automatons (Six, Oils, Felix) enslaved in its wake.
- **The Ring is a beacon.** Inside a Vaultsinger hall it may win an ally or mark the party as looters of exactly what the order guards.
- **The mine still ticks.** "Before the season turns" / the Shifting. Janos's people may be sealed alive; the cave back toward [[Brefield]] / [[The Collapsed Reach]] is the next expedition.
- **Protect Oils.** Don't let the Suits — or the Vaultsingers — trace the tip back to him.
- **Complication seeds:** a Suits watcher trailing the party; Felix testing them hard before yielding anything; an attendant noticing the Ring.
---
## Runtime Dials (table calls — no prep needed)
- How much does Felix reveal vs. withhold this session? (He guards ley-line specifics.)
- Do the Vaultsingers ask to *keep* the Ring, or copy it into the vault and return it?
- Does anyone recognize Six/Oils as kin to Felix — a beat of automaton solidarity (the Broken Choir)?
---
## Loose Threads / Housekeeping
- **New notes written this prep:** [[Vault Singers' Church]], [[Felix Tanner - Vault Singers' Church|Felix Tanner]], [[The Pigskin]], [[Karen - The Pigskin|Karen]], [[Oils - The Pigskin|Oils]] — all placed under [[Caford]] and cross-linked; Felix + the vault added to the [[Vaultsingers Overview]].
- **Red-link stubs worth creating:** [[The Explorer]] & [[Faken]] (the Ring's legend), [[Ashfall Squad]] (Janos's vanished unit).
- **[[Commander Taylor's Proposition|Commander Taylor]] has no NPC note** — links resolve to his Proposition doc. Given the double-agent canon, worth a real note that reconciles him with the existing `"The Spade" – Unnamed Enforcer` (is Taylor the mask, the man behind it, or a separate seat?).
- **[[z_other/Campaign Flow|Campaign Flow]]** still ends at Taylor's Manor with "hold" nodes — never extended through the Brefield or Caford arcs.

Where we left off
The party smuggled a wounded, wingless dragon ("[[The Second Dragon]]") out of a cattle-class stock car, shrinking it down and hauling it through the roof hatch. They're now hidden between the train and the station wall at Brefield's station, freshly arrived from Caford, with a magically-shrunk dragon that wants to go home to the volcanic mountains and has revealed it is (somehow) already dead. This is the town where the flooded-mine conspiracy actually lives — and where Janos's vanished [[Ashfall Squad]] may be sealed underground.
The two immediate pulls
The party is holding a dragon-shaped complication while sitting on top of the main-plot destination. Expect them to resolve the dragon first (it's loud, urgent, and personal to Saif), then turn to the mine. Prep both.
Likely scenes / locations
- Brefield Station & Smelters' Row (right now) — soot, fog, 26-hour shift bells. Immediate problem: exfiltrating a dragon past handlers who just lost cargo. Who owned that "dangerous creature," and are they already looking?
- [[The Splintered Snake]] — their lodging off Smelters' Row. Natural regroup point to stash the dragon and plan. Reminder: Vezra watched them from two doors down here; a nervous keeper and a guest ledger are unpulled threads.
- The Mine-Warden's Office — where [[Magistrate Corvin Hale - Brefield|Corvin Hale]] signs shafts' fates. The single richest scene in town: a corrupt, terrified, squeezable official the party can crack open.
- The Ore-Scales — [[Hobb Tallow - Brefield|Hobb Tallow]]'s weighing station; the second money-thread and the route the night caravans take up the mountain.
- [[The Collapsed Reach]] (dungeon horizon) — the condemned "flooded" Shaft III, secretly the conspiracy's active ley-line dig. STUB — build the interior before they climb. They have the cave entrance marked on their map.
- The volcanic mountains (off-map, for the dragon) — Falduhir is alpine/highland; if the dragon's home is volcanic it's likely a journey, not a walk. Decide how far (see Loose Ends).
---
NPCs in play
- [[The Second Dragon]] — freed, shrunk, wingless, dying/dead. Voice: ancient, pained, grateful, hohe volcanic mountains. Hook: Why was it on a train, mutilated? Who was shipping dragons — and towhom? (A live thread straight into someone's cruelty or trade.)
- Magistrate Corvin Hale (Human, 54) — Mine-Warden. Voice: officious-loud when bluffing, dry rasp w to buy a beat; glances at door/window — not watching the party, watching for the Suits. Wants: tosurvive and keep telling himself he only "condemned a shaft." Secret: three Suits payments; falsified Shaft III survey; flagged in the ledger margin for "mending" — marked for death. Breaks fastest to fear + protection ("other
tailors"). Full break-tiers in his note.
- Hobb Tallow (Halfling, ~50, working name) — scale-master. Knows which nights the unmanifested macift route up to the Reach. Deniable, careful; DM to decide frightened vs. mercenary.
- [[Wren Maddox - Brefield|Wren Maddox]] (working name, STUB) — the in-town Suits courier, "a face ssed," possibly also the watcher on Hale. The human end of the "tithe to the Reach."
- Felix Tanner (Caford — dangling) — the ancient Archivist automaton behind the Vault Singers' Churve up what he knows of the Ashfall Squad and the flooded mine. The party bounced off him last
session; he's still owed a return trip.
---
Factions & agendas
- [[House of Suits Overview|House of Suits]] — running the whole Brefield operation: bought Hale, gto the Reach." A watcher is already on Hale — press him loudly or twice and the Suits move to killhim early.
- The ley-line conspiracy ([[Campaign Premise]]) — Shaft III is a live drilling face: "the third li and the Reach goes quiet for good." Clock: "before the season turns" — the spring thaw ("theShifting").
- Benton Brothers Mining Co. (Vexen-aligned owners) vs. the Pick-Belters Union (Belter miners) — lo can leverage or trip.
- The Crown Elect election (Belters vs. Vexens) — Hale rode the new Belter majority; his fraud tying the Belters to the dig is politically radioactive. [[Commander Taylor]] (the "Spade") was seen carving up the map at the Suits
Casino — the through-line back to Voxiu.
---
Open hooks & threats
1. Get the dragon out — and answer who was trafficking it. Immediate, and a potential new plot arte
2. Reach Hale before the Suits do. He's a living witness with a personal death-clock; protecting him becomes its own side-quest.
3. Trace the money: Hale → Hobb → night caravans → the lift → the Reach.
4. Rescue the Ashfall Squad — Janos's whole reason for being here; they may be sealed inside the "flooded" shaft.
5. Unpulled Splintered Snake threads — the keeper, the ledger, who's asked after the party.
6. Complications: the lost stock-car cargo triggering a search; the Suits watcher noticing pressureck; Wren Maddox recognizing them first.
---
Loose ends to decide (your calls)
1. The dragon's destination — how far are the volcanic mountains, and is getting it there this sessf? Does it stay dead / become a spirit ally, or is it saveable?
2. Who was shipping the dragons, and does that connect to the Suits/conspiracy or open a new thread?
3. Wren Maddox — which earlier "passed face" is this, and are they also the watcher on Hale? (Deterg Hale is.)
4. Hobb Tallow — frightened witness or mercenary?
5. The Collapsed Reach interior — this is a stub. If they climb this session, I should help you buie drilling apparatus, what's left of the miners/squad) before the table.
